Before the playoffs began in 1959, a mythical state champion was named in various years by different

media outlets…including The Mountain Poll from Eastern Kentucky and another by the Paducah Sun.

The Litkenhous Ratings were published in the Louisville Courier-Journal starting in 1936,

and their “state champions” for each year are listed at the bottom of this page. Several schools

claimed the mythical state title designation in various years, and some of them are also listed below.

1997 The game score was 21-13; officially changed to 1-0.

In April, 1998, it was discovered that star running back Artose (AR toose) Pinner was too old to have played in the 1997 season. Hopkinsville had finished the season 13-2 and lost the championship game 13-21 to Covington Catholic, but was forced to forfeit all its wins, give back its trophies, give back over $2,000 to the KHSAA for its trip to the AAA finals, was put on one year’s probation, and Pinner...who had become the school’s all-time leading rusher...had his name removed from the record books. He had gained over 3,000 yards rushing in 1997 alone.

1971 Tie game; teams declared co-champions.

1960 Eastern forfeited to Male because at that time, the state championship game was not played until the annual Male-Manual battle on Thanksgiving. Eastern accepted the Jefferson County championship and forfeited the state title to Male.
