Competition Overview

This WorldSKills UK competition focuses on the role and tasks of a beauty therapist. This includes carrying out a range of treatments which reflect both current and traditional beauty therapy treatments. The selected treatments will be a reflection of current industrial requirements. The requirements of this competition will vary depending on the level entered.

The competition is organised by the Vocational Training Charitable Trust (VTCT) and supported by industry partners.

  • Have hair tied up off the face with no stray hairs
  • Wear a clean suitable uniform, correctly fitting with trousers not touching the floor
  • Wear a suitable make-up with no obvious fake tan, nails clean and short
  • No jewellery should be worn
  • Maintain correct posture throughout

Note: Core Competencies are tested, identified and measured as recognition of the competition level and duration. The severity of the marking schedule is regulated in relation to the National Final standard as follows:

Regional Heats

The competition comprises 2 tasks which are designed to test the artistic and technical ability of the candidate: -

  1. Mini Facial with Day Make-up 1 hour 30 mins which includes cleansing the model’s pre applied make-up, applying a visible face mask, tone and moisturise and applying a new Day Make-up using concealer, foundation, contouring, blusher, eyebrow product, eye shadow, mascara and lip product .
  2. Applying Crème Red nail enamel to all 10 nails and Nail Art to both ring fingers only to match the picture provided in 30 mins.

Stage 2

The top 8 scores throughout the country will be invited to take part in the UK Finals at the NEC in November 2017.

Who can enter?

  • Any student or apprentice who is working towards or has completed a Level 2/3 qualification in Beauty Therapy
  • Employed Beauty Therapist who has completed a recognised Level 2 /3 certificate within the last 12 months

How many competitors can enter from each organisation?

A maximum of 2 competitors per organisation per location

Those ineligible to compete are: -

  • Previous Gold Medal Winners
  • Previous Squad UK and Team UK Worldskills members (those who have received Worldskills training)
  • Current Worldskills UK Squad members

Practice & Preparation

  • It is useful to practice each treatment in full several times before competing to ensure you are able to control your timings.
  • Use a stop watch/fob watch so you have access to the remaining minutes at all times.
  • Prepare using the online tools available at:
  • Where possible practice the tasks you don’t use in your everyday work or course.
  • Speak to your employer or lecturer to ask for help with learning or equipment where needed.

Task Breakdown

Please see the Competition Brief for the 2 tasks, the competitor will have to: -

  • Set-up and organise their work area
  • Maintain their area throughout the competition – dispose of waste as it occurs
  • Ensure client comfort and protection throughout
  • Work in a safe and hygienic manner
  • Work within the time limits set for each task
  • Clean up and pack away at the end of the allocated time
