Vocabulary Homework

This is your spelling/vocabulary ”contract” for the rest of the year. For each unit, you may choose how many activities you complete. You may do each activity only one time each unit. Make sure you spell ALL words correctly on each activity.

This will be a homework grade, out of 25 possible points.

Projects must be neat, complete, and done correctly. All contract work will be due on Test day. Late Vocab homework WILL NOT be accepted. This homework is meant to help you study for your tests—please use the Pre-Assessment as a guide for the activities you choose. Do not wait until the night before to do all of your activities!

5 point Activities

  1. Color writing: Write the words 3x each using one color for vowels and another for consonants.
  2. Make a set of flash cards for studying your words. (words on front, definitions on back)
  3. Write the words in shapes. (concrete poetry)
  4. Write your words (handwrite) 3x each, and copy the sentence from the book.
  5. Finger spell your words in ASL to your parent. Get a signed note as verification. www.aslpro.com is a good resource for this.
  6. Use Ms. Filipek’s rubber stamp set, and spell the words out. (please ask permission, not during direct instruction time)

7.  Spelling Scramble: Write each word with the letters scrambled. Switch with a partner of family member and unscramble to find the spelling word. Example: oehus=house (hidden message added = 10 point activity)

8.  Write each word in a triangle: example:

9.  Phone Spelling: Use the number/letter pad on a phone. Write each vocab word and its phone number.

  1. Use a thesaurus or dictionary to find a synonym or antonym for each word. Rewrite the book’s example sentence using the new word instead (you may need to change some words around)
  2. Using your dictionary, find your words and write the page number along with the two guidewords at the top of the dictionary page (Ex. Lone – pg 514, loge – long).
  3. Classify words according to parts of speech. (PAVPANIC)

10 Point Activities

1.  Write the longest sentences you can, using as many vocab words as you can. Underline the words, and punctuate the sentences correctly.

2.  Write three columns of questions (5 each) “Jeopardy”-style. Ex: “It is a compound word that is a type of school bag.” ans: “What is a backpack?”—make sure you come up with category names too!

3.  Spelling Story: Choose 15 of your spelling words and use them in a story. (Ask Ms. F for alternate options)

4.  What’s your word worth?: Each letter is worth a different amount of money. Write what each letter is worth and add it up to see which Vocab word is worth the most. A= 1cent, B=2cents, C=3… Y=25, Z=26 cents. CAT =3(C)+1 (A)+ 20 (T) = 24 cents

5.  Spelling Poems: Use rhyming words to write a poem. Must use at least 10 of your words.

6.  Make a (handwritten) word search on graph paper with all your words and have someone else solve it.

7.  Create a cartoon strip using al least 10 spelling words.

8.  Create a crossword puzzle with definitions in your own words on puzzlemaker.discoveryeducation.com

9.  Do the all activities in the chapter in your workbook.

15 Point Activities

1.  Create an analogies list showing the relationships between words. (use entire list)

2.  Create a “denotation chain” flow map of synonyms for ten words.

3.  Create a “denotation chain” flow map for five words, expanding two with cause-and-effect as well.

4.  Complete the Frayer Model for eight vocab words.
