Job Purpose: To research, construct, validate, and commission fibre lasers and other laser sources within the high-power fibre lasers research group and the project “FLITES”under the supervision of the award holder.
Key Accountabilities/Primary Responsibilities (6-10 bullet points maximum)
  • Be part of a team and take on day-to-day responsibility for the research and developmentfibre laser sources and other laser sources for aero engine plume monitoring. Validation and commissioning of the laser sources off-site.
  • Disseminate findings (e.g., in the form of reports) internally to the group/school, to project partner and to external audiences such as conferences; prepare publication materials for refereed journals and conferences.
  • Carry out administrative tasks associated with project and university operational requirements, e.g. risk assessment of research activities, organisation of meetings and documentation. Implementation of procedures for health and safety and timely accurate formal reporting of outcomes.
  • Contribute to the organisation and day-to-day smooth running of the research group, and take part in the supervision of PhD students.

Special Requirements: Need to spend time away from Southampton for laser commissioning (within the UK). Need to travel internationally for conference participation.

Qualifications, Knowledge and Experience:
PhD
Experimental and theoretical knowledge of optics, optical fibres, lasers, or related work.
Mathematical modelling.
Experience of numerical software and numerical solutions of mathematical / physical problems.
Knowledge /experience in analogue and digital electronics synthesizing, including RF electronics.
Knowledge / experience in Labview or similar software.
Knowledge / experience in optoelectronic packaging. / √
