Supplemental Capacity Building Fund
The Bayview Hunters Point Community Fund (BVHPCF) was established in 2001 to support youth serving agencies in the Bayview Hunters Point (BVHP) community in San Francisco. Its vision is that youth living in BVHP are actively engaged in youth development programs and activities within indigenous organizations that promote wellness and that work together to create innovative solutions to community problems. The purpose of the BVHPCF is to support young people by strengthening the capacity of youth serving organizations to create sustained community wellnessin BVHP neighborhoods.
Supplemental Capacity Building Fund
BVHPCF provides general support grants and in-depth capacity building assistance through individual and group activities. In addition, BVHPCF operates the Supplemental Capacity Building Fund to provide current grantees with timely grants. The goal of the Supplemental Capacity Building Fund is to assist grantee organizations in meeting specific capacity building goals and undertaking particular activities in the areas of staff leadership development, youth development, and organizational development. Such activities must be in line with capacity building work plans that are developed with assistance from BVHPCF.
Organizations may apply for grants through the Supplemental Capacity Building Fund no more than two times per calendar year. Individual requests can range from $500 to $3,000, with the combination of two requests not exceeding $3,000 a year. Grants through the Supplemental Capacity Building Fund must only be used for the specific activities detailed in the request. Funds can be requested to support a number of expenses, such as organizational development consultants; participation in external trainings, workshops, or conferences; or peer exchanges with other non-profit organizations.
Example of Appropriate Supplemental Capacity Building FundActivity:
Goal: Increase staff’s fiscal management skills
Activity: Attendance by executive director in training at CompassPoint covering financial planning and management for non-profit organizations.
How activity will help achieve goal: The training will increase the executive director’s skills. The executive director will conduct a staff training based on what she learned in the training for other senior staff to increase their financial management skills.
Organizational investment: The executive director will invest 4 hours of her time in attending the training and the organization will pay for travel costs associated with participation. Three hours of staff time will be invested in the staff training.
Budget: $350
Timeline: Training is scheduled for May 1, 2007
BVHPCF will consider and process Supplemental Capacity Building Fund applications as quickly as possible; organizations will receive a response within one month. If there is a specific deadline that must be met in order to take advantage of a particular opportunity, please specify this information in the application. Recipients of Supplemental Capacity Building Fund grants must report back to BVHPCF within two months of use of the funds (a report form will be sent out to grant recipients).
