TRAINING COURSES

Baynesfield Training Academy is a training service provider in the field of Pig Production. The academy offers a two weeks practical (70%) and theoretical (30%) training that covers all aspects of pig production (knowledge and skills) and management of the pig production units (business skills). Training focusses on the transfer of skills and knowledge required to ensure the economic sustainability of a pig farm. Training is provided on various levels of knowledge and skills to the following clients: developing pig farmers, farm managers, pig farm labourers, extension officers, animal health technicians, agricultural students and learners and any other individual interested in pig farming.

The following course is offered at the Academy:

1. Course name: Pig production and management

2. Course content:

2.1 Theoretical content -

·  Basic terminology

·  The South African pig industry

·  Different breeds

·  The importance of Biosecurity

·  Pig welfare and basic pig health

·  Management of the mating house (Gestation and Boars)

·  Management of the farrowing sows and new born piglets

·  Management of the weaner pigs

·  Basic management of growing pigs

·  Basic feeding practices at different stages of pig production

·  Housing principles for different production stages

·  Planning and budgeting

·  Marketing

2.2 Practical skills content -

§  Preparation of the farrowing house

§  Preparation of the sows for the farrowing house

§  Conduct all management practices during farrowing

§  Feeding practices at different stages of pig production

§  Cleaning and disinfecting pig housing

§  Bio-security in the piggery

§  Recognise breeding behaviour in pigs

§  Heat detection

§  Conduct the natural mating of pigs

§  Artificial insemination

§  Pregnancy testing

§  Vaccinations and treatments

§  Selection for marketing

3. Duration of the course: The course is offered for the duration of two weeks. A certificate of attendance will be issued after the successful completion of the course.

4. Starting time of the course: The course commence officially on a Monday morning at 7:00. Students that will be staying over at the academy are advised to arrive on a Sunday afternoon.

5. Course Costs

5.1 OPTION 1: Staying on the farm for 2 weeks including the weekend (accommodation, meals and tuition) = R6800.00

5.2 OPTION 2: Staying on the farm for 2 weeks excluding the weekend (accommodation, meals and tuition)
(Leave after lunch on Friday return for dinner on Sunday) = R6400.00

5.3 OPTION 3: Attending the course and having lunch but not utilizing the accommodation = R4900

6. Bookings

Bookings for courses are essential, due to limited number of spaces both in the accommodation and on the course. A R500.00 non-refundable booking fee is required to secure a booking. The outstanding balance is payable prior to the arrival on the farm. All payments should be made electronically and proof of payment be send to the academy. NO CASH IS ALLOWED AT THE ACADEMY.
