This event is proud to participate in the (Fill in section) Synchronized Skating Challenge Series. Participation in this series is open to all Beginner 1, 2, or 3 teams and preliminary, pre-juvenile, juvenile, open juvenile, open collegiate or open adult teams. Visit for more information on this series. Results of this event for participating teams will be reported to U.S. Figure Skating for calculation of the series results.

Who May Compete

1)All US Figure Skating synchronized skating teams as described in this announcement are eligible. Short and Long programs will be skated as separate events. Event levels may be combined as appropriate and at the discretion of the Chief Referee.

2)All ISI synchronized skating teams (Formation, Synchronized and Synchronized Dance) and ISI ensemble teams are eligible. Event levels may be combined as appropriate and at the discretion of the Chief Referee. ISI teams please refer to the ISI announcement and forms.

3)All Theater on Ice teams and ISI Production teams. Event levels may be combined as appropriate and at the discretion of the Chief Referee.

Our goal is to provide an opportunity for teams from ISI and US Figure Skating to compete and to help the growth of team skating in all its forms. To further this goal, we are willing to be very flexible and make any accommodation that would allow more teams to participate. Entry Fees

The Entry Fees are: $17 per skater (Including Alternates)

Special Skater event: No charge

Team Surprise Event: $5 per team of 4 skaters

One Team entered in a division will constitute an event.

Late entries will be accepted at the discretion of the Chief Referee and the LOC.

Completed entry forms and team rosters must be sent with appropriate fees.

General Rules: The Bay Cities Synchronized Team Skating Competition is sanctioned by U.S. Figure Skating and will be conducted under the rules set forth in the 2013 edition of the U.S. Figure Skating Rulebook and this announcement. Particular note should be taken of these sections:

  • Rule 3070: Eligibility to compete
  • Rule 2056: Events to be skated
  • Rules 7200-7520: Requirements for each level
  • Rule 2910: Duration and Warm-up Periods of Synchronized Team Skating
  • Rule 7020: Clothing - Synchronized Team Skating
  • Rule 7021: The costume of the competitors must be modest, dignified, and appropriate for athletic competition, not garish or theatrical in design. The costume may, however, reflect the character of the music chosen.
  • A. Ladies may wear a skirt or body suits or full-length trousers. Ladies skirts must not be below the top of the calf of the legs for safety reasons.
  • B. Men must wear full-length trousers; no tights are permitted.
  • C. The costume must not give the effect of excessive nudity for an athletic sport. The costume and make-up must not be theatrical and must not highlight any skater.
  • D. Headdresses must be kept to a minimum. Any ornamentation attached to clothing or head must be firmly fastened so as not to fall off while skating under normal competitive conditions. There can be no props on the ice and hand props such as banners, canes, or pompoms are not permitted.
  • Rule 7022:Sequins, rhinestones or jeweled trim may be used in moderation on the clothing of senior, junior and collegiate synchronized skating teams only. This adornment is allowed on the bodice only. Sleeves and skirts are to be void of adornment. Feathers or other materials that could be dislodged upon contact are not allowed. The use of adornments at all other levels is prohibited.
  • Rule 7024: The use of hair pins and bobby pins is prohibited while skating in any synchronized skating competition.

Liability: U.S. Figure Skating, St. Moritz Ice Skating Club, and Sharks Ice San Jose accept no responsibility for injury or damage sustained by any participant in these championships. This is in accordance with Rule 1600 of the 2013 edition of the official U.S. Figure Skating Rulebook.

Registration: The registration table will open one hour prior to the first event. The coach or contact person must check in at the Registration Desk one hour prior to the team’s event. Music should be turned in and picked up at Registration.

Bulletins Notices: An Official Bulletin Board or wall space so designated will be maintained at Sharks Ice San Jose and will contain official information only. Notices posted here are considered sufficient notice to all entrants. Check frequently for any change in the schedule or other notices.

Ice Surface

Sharks Ice at San Jose is a four surface ice rink. The Center Rink is 85’ X 200’ with slightly rounded corners and will be used for the competition. Practice ice purchased from the arena may be on the other surfaces.

Absolutely no flash photography is allowed of competitors on the ice. The flash may cause distraction leading to error or injury.

Concessions may be purchased at the Sharks Ice snack bar in the lobby or at Stanley’s Restaurant and Bar.

Music

  • Competition music must be turned in at the registration desk and must be submitted no later than one hour prior to the event in which the team is skating.
  • Only CDs will be accepted. CDs must be clearly marked with team name, event entered and the music length and contained in paper or soft plastic CD case.
  • There should be only one track per CD.
  • All teams must have an additional copy of their music available for practice sessions.
  • Teams must also have an extra copy available quickly during the actual competition event.
  • Music should be picked up at the registration desk shortly following the conclusion of the event. The St. Moritz ISC is not responsible for music that is not picked up.

Critiques:

Critiques of US Figure Skating synchronized teams and Theater on Ice teams will be available on request. Critiques will be done after the presentation of the trophies.

ADULT, COLLEGIATE AND INTERMEDIATE TEAMS AND HIGHER SHOULD PROVIDE A PLANNED PROGRAM CONTENT FORM FOR USE IN THE CRITIQUE. Please mail it with your registration or email to the registrar – IJS level teams will receive a protocol with levels and judges scores.

Schedules

We will attempt to email schedules out at least two weeks prior to the competition. The schedule will also be made available on the club website and will be updated as necessary. PLEASE NOTE THAT THE FINAL SCHEDULE WILL BE POSTED THE DAY OF THE COMPETITION AND ANY SCHEDULES DISTRIBUTED BEFORE THAT ARE TENTATIVE.

Judging / Awards and Trophies

US Figure Skating 6.0 judging system will be used for US Figure Skating events.

1st through 4th place medals will be given to each skater and alternate. Medals will be distributed at the registration desk immediately after results are posted.

Five special team trophies will be presented. Every team in the competition will be eligible to compete for five of the trophies. No team will be awarded more than one trophy.

The special awards are as follows:

  1. Artistic Award – given to the team with the most entertaining program. Audience reaction, costuming, composition, presentation and style will be considered.
  2. Technical Merit Award – given to the team with the best skating ability as a team.
  3. Best Team Award – given to the best team at any level representing a US Figure Skating Club.
  4. Judges Choice Award – criteria to be decided by event judges.
  5. Team Spirit Award – awarded by Local Organizing Committee.

Team Trophies will be awarded at the conclusion of all the events.

SECTION1: U.S. FIGURE SKATING STANDARD COMPETITIVE EVENTS

Note to teams regarding moves in the field test requirements:

Minimum moves in the field test levels are not required at this competition.

A. Preliminary:A team of 8 to 16 skaters. All skaters must be under 12. The majority of the team must be under 10 on the preceding July 1.

Program duration: 2 minutes.

C. Pre-Juvenile:A team of 8 to 16 skaters. The majority of the team must be under 12 on the preceding July 1.

Program duration: 2 minutes.

Well balanced program: Rule 7260

D. Open Juvenile:A team of 8 to16 skaters. The majority of the team must be under 19 on the preceding July 1. All skaters must have passed the pre-preliminary moves in the field test.

Program duration: 2 ½ minutes.

Well balanced program: Rule 7250

E. Juvenile:A team of 12 to 20 skaters. Skaters must be under 13 on the preceding July 1 and have passed the preliminary moves in the field test.

Program duration: 3 minutes.

F. Intermediate:A team of 12 to 20 skaters. Skaters must be under 18 on the preceding July 1 and have passed the pre-juvenile moves in the field test.

Program duration: 3 ½ minutes.

G. Novice:A team of 12 to 20 skaters. Skaters must be under 16, with the exception that up to 4 team members may be 16 or 17, on the preceding July 1 and have passed the juvenile moves in the field test.

H. Junior:A team of 12 to 16 skaters. Skaters must be at least 12 and under 19 on the preceding July 1. All skaters must have passed the intermediate moves in the field test.

Short program duration: Maximum 2 minutes, 50 seconds

Free skate duration: 4 minutes

I. Senior:A team of 16 skaters. Skaters must be at least 14 on the preceding July 1 and have passed the novice moves in the field test.

Short program duration: Maximum 2 minutes, 50 seconds

J. Open CollegiateA team of 8 to 16 skaters. Skaters must be enrolled in a college

or university as a full-time student, as of the entry deadline.

Program duration: 3 minutes.

K. Collegiate:A team of 12 to 20 skaters. Skaters must be enrolled in a college or university as a full-time student, as of the entry deadline, and have passed the juvenile moves in the field test.

Program duration: 4 minutes.

L. Open Adult:A team of 8 to 16 skaters. The majority of skaters must be 19 years or older on the preceding July 1.

Program duration: 2 ½ minutes.

Well balanced program: Rule 7520

M. Masters:A team of 12 to 20 skaters. Skaters must be at least 25, and the majority of the team must be at least 30 on the preceding July 1.

Program duration: 3 minutes.

Well balanced program: Rule 7510

N. Adult:A team of 12 to 20 skaters. All skaters must be at least 21 on the preceding July 1 with the exception that up to four team members may be 18, 19 or 20 years of age. All skaters must have passed either the preliminary moves in the field test, the adult bronze moves in the field test, the preliminary figure test or the preliminary dance test.

Crossover Rules:

No team may be comprised of more than 50% of athletes that are also on any other team. This applies to both the entire roster and the athletes that are skating on the ice at any given competition.

The chart below illustrates the levels where crossover skaters are allowed. The shaded areas indicate no crossovers are allowed. An “X” indicates crossovers are allowed between the two levels, providing all requirements are met as defined Rules 7200 – 7290, in addition to the statement above.

SECTION 2: SPECIAL EVENTS

Special Skater Production/Theater on Ice Team:

Open to groups of any number of Special Skaters and helpers performing to music. Walkers and other assistive devices as needed. Props and scenery permitted. One mark will be given. All Skaters will receive an award.

Program length: Up to 4:30 – plus time to get the skaters on and off the ice.

Team Surprise Event: Open to all skaters in teams of 4. Teams may be divided depending on the skating/test level of the skaters.

Each skater on the team will be expected to complete a task. The fastest team of four skaters that completes the required task will win the event.

Events may or may not involve skating skills.

This event will be held after the last competitive event and before the presentation of trophies.

SECTION 3: U.S. FIGURE SKATING THEATER ON ICE EVENTS

Number of Skaters: A Theatre On Ice team may have no fewer than eight (8) members all of whom must skate at some point during the number. A team may have an unlimited number ofalternates but no more than 30 may skate in a competition. Preliminary level teams arelimited to a maximum of twenty (20) skaters on a team..

Senior

Test, Team Size and Age Requirements

  • Team Size: 8-30 skaters
  • Test qualifications as of December 1st
  • More than 50% of the team must have passed the Juvenile or Adult Gold FS Test
  • 100% must have must have passed the Preliminary or Adult Pre-Bronze MIF test
  • No age limits

Program Duration

  • CE 2:30 +/- 10 seconds
  • Free Skate 6:00 +/- 15 seconds

Junior

Test, Team Size and Age Requirements

  • Team Size: 8-30 skaters
  • Test qualifications as of December 1st
  • No more than 50% of the team may have passed the Juvenile or Adult Gold.
  • 100% must have must have passed the Preliminary or Adult Pre-Bronze MIF test
  • No age limits

Program Duration

  • CE 2:30 +/- 10 seconds
  • Free Skate 6:00 +/- 15 seconds

Novice

Test, Team Size and Age Requirements

  • Team Size: 8-30 skaters
  • Test qualifications as of December 1st
  • 100% must have must have passed the Pre-preliminary MIF test
  • No one on the team may have passed the Juvenile or Adult Gold FS test.
  • 80% of the team must be under age 15 as of December 1st of the competition year
  • No skater may have reached age 19 as of December 1st of the competition year.

Program Duration

  • CE 2:30 +/- 10 seconds
  • Free Skate 5:00 +/- 15 seconds

Preliminary

Test, Team Size and Age Requirements

  • Test qualifications as of December 1st
  • Minimum of 8 - maximum of 20 skaters
  • 100% of the team must have mastered the skills of the Basic Skills Free Skate 1

test and may not have passed any test higher than Pre-Preliminary MIF test.

  • Age requirement as of December 1st of the preceding year: Skaters must be 17

years of age or under.

  • Costumes may be worn for the Free Skate, but props and scenery are not allowed.

Program Duration

  • CE 2:00 +/- 10 seconds
  • Free Skate 2:30 +/- 10 seconds

Adult

Test, Team Size and Age Requirements

  • Team Size: 8-30 skaters
  • Test qualifications as of December 1st
  • 100% of the team must have passed at least one US Figure Skating test (not including a Basic Skills badge). This may include adult or standard MIF, Individual Dance test,

Freestyle or Pairs.

  • 100% of the team must have reached the age of 18 years as of the December 1st preceding the competition.

Program Duration

  • CE 2:30 +/- 10 seconds
  • Free Skate 6:00 +/- 15 seconds

Open

Test, Team Size and Age Requirements

  • Team Size: 8-15 skaters
  • Test qualifications as of December 1st
  • 100% of the team must have passed at least one US Figure Skating test (not including a Basic Skills badge). This may include adult or standard MIF, Individual Dance test,

Freestyle or Pairs.

  • No age restrictions.

Program Duration

  • CE 2:30 +/- 10 seconds
  • Free Skate 5:00 +/- 15 seconds

Crossovers:No Crossovers are permitted in any TOI division.

Event Timing: Timing will begin with the first purposeful movement of any member of the TOI team. For performances that are over or under the time allotment standard time deductions will apply as per U.S. Figure Skating rule 3526. Timing will cease when the last skater comes to a complete stop. If skaters begin movement during the reading of the performance description, then timing will begin then. Timing will cease when the last skater comes to a complete stop. Upon taking their position on the ice, a member of the team should raise and lower either their right or left arm to signify that the team is ready to begin their performance. This movement does not count as the “purposeful movement” noted above.
