JOB TITLE: Academic Advisor

This is a part-time, contracted, evening position. The advisor works approximately 22 hours/week, Monday through Thursday, from 4:00 PM to 9:30 PM from September through April. Daytime hours are worked in August and May, with a total of approximately 750 hours over the course of the school year.

SUMMARY

The academic advisor reviews transcripts and helps students plan a path towards graduation. They schedule students in appropriate classes and monitor their progress towards graduation. Experience with the Michigan Merit Curriculum is preferred. The advisor counsels students on personal, post-secondary, and employment issues, and will work with outside agencies to find support for students. The advisor also coordinates ongoing student and program assessment.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESinclude the following.

  • Ensure compliance with WDA requirements for High School Completion and GED participants including Adult Learning Plans, CASAS Assessments, MAERS Data and Follow Up information.
  • Create transcripts for all HSC and GED students
  • Track and update transcripts when students earn credits
  • Provide guidance and direction to students regarding coursework, test out options, program choice, eligibility, and career plans
  • Participate in registration of students
  • Coordinate tutoring efforts with students who may need additional assistance
  • Oversee credit recovery students and maintain communication with home school counselor
  • Coordinate work experience credit, military credit and test out options for HSC students
  • Plan and organize a college night event for students
  • Serve as a GED examiner and administer the exam as needed
  • Administer the SAT and MDE required test to eligible students annually
  • Prepare or help prepare any documents for students to present to outside agencies (i.e. Social Security, Friend of the Court, Department of Human Services etc…)
  • Assist in graduation ceremony by obtaining Delta Scholarship, ordering caps and gowns and diplomas, organizing and tracking eligible graduates, and participating in the ceremony
  • Assist Supervisor and instructors with student discipline issues and document any incident reports, suspensions or other disciplinary action
  • Serve as the administrator in charge in the absence of the Supervisor
  • Other duties as required or needed by the supervisor or others

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Master’s Degree in Education, Counseling, Social Work or other human services related field; or a Bachelor’s Degree in one of those disciplines and at least 2 years experience in a related field.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to apply advanced mathematical concepts such as exponents, logarithms, quadratic equations, and permutations. Ability to apply mathematical operations to such tasks as frequency distribution, determination of test reliability and validity, analysis of variance, correlation techniques, sampling theory, and factor analysis.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit and talk or hear and operate a computer.
