SUMMARY:With minimal supervision and a high level of personal initiative, the Coalition Coordinatoris responsible for the encouragement of community mobilization to implement evidence-based environmental strategies with a primary focus on changing policies and social norms in communities to prevent and reduce underage drinking in Matagorda, Wharton and Fort Bend Counties and a secondary focus to prevent marijuana or prescription drug use/abuse based on the identified needs of the community, Primarily serving youth and young adults(ages 18-25 in colleges and universities and the secondary population being the community as a whole).

ESSENTIAL DUTIES RESPONSIBILITIES: These duties include but are not limited to the following. Responsible for:

  • MaintainingCertified Prevention Specialist (CPS)/Associate Prevention Specialist (APS)certification, if already an APSobtaining CPS certification within 18 months of hire.
  • Documentation of all aspects of Coalition activities, reporting activities to supervisor for compilation of measures/goals for reporting purposes.
  • Working with the Communication Coordinator for promotion of activities and updates on website.
  • Attendance required at Annual Prevention Provider meeting in Austin.
  • Attendance & coordination of Coalition members’ attendance at the DSHS Annual Behavioral Health Institute Coalition Summit.
  • Being knowledgeable and understanding of the CCP programmatic policies and procedures.
  • Being knowledgeable and have understanding of the rules in Title 25 of the Texas Administrative Code (TAC), Chapter 447.
  • Being knowledgeable and have understanding of Strategic Prevention Framework 5-step process as a guide for Coalition activities.
  • Conducting culturally competent educational presentations for youth, young adults adults focused on identified Coalition priorities.
  • Building capacity and sustainability for the coalition by encouraging involvement with all twelve key sectors of the community.
  • Development of working relationships with members of resource networks and social service agencies serving the community through securing written Community Agreements/Memorandums of Understanding.
  • Ensure coalition activities are documented adequately, accurately, and in a timely manner in accordance with the Coalition Department policies and procedures and BACODA’s Quality Management Standards.
  • Coordination, delivery and follow up with the Community Needs Assessment surveys.
  • Collaboration with Region 6 Prevention Resource Center and other DSHS funded coalitions by participating in events, surveys, sharing data & resources.
  • Ensure that all Coalition activities are focused on targeted population (primary age college students and the general community as secondary). All strategies and activities are focused on the targeted environmental strategies, policy or social nor change developed for that specific community.
  • May be asked to participate as a team member in Quality Management Team activities within the programs at BACODA.
  • Responsible for attending trainings and certification as required for position.
  • CPR/First Aid within 60 days of date of hire or start of contract, whichever is the later date
  • 15-hour prevention training within 6 months of date of hire or start of contract, whichever is the later consisting of cultural competency, risk and protective factors/building resiliency, child development/adolescent development, strategies for strengthening families and prevention across the life span.
  • Substance Abuse Prevention Skills Training SAPST (one time certification requirement), completion within 18 months of date of hire
  • 15-hours of prevention continuing education annually, this is required after completion of the initial 15-hour training the first year of hire.
  • Proactively responds to support BACODA’s mission and staff to conduct presentations, attending community events, attend meetings and other miscellaneous duties.
  • Works and meets with supervisor: informs of activity status and problems, reviews measure goals, and receives instruction on further program development and problem solving.
  • In addition to all the above duties, the Tri-County Community Coalition Coordinator is responsible for carrying out all other work-related duties that may be assigned by supervisor/director or as needed to carry out the mission of the Bay Area Council on Drugs & Alcohol, Inc.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Supervisory duties with volunteers

QUALIFICATIONS:Must have personal and professional ties in Wharton or Matagorda County. Must be a Certified Prevention Specialist (CPS) or willing to become an Associate Prevention Specialist (APS) working toward becoming a CPS. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty listed above satisfactorily. EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE: 3+ years in the field of in the prevention field. Successful candidate is expected to demonstrate understanding of a prevention philosophy and an understanding of the principles, practices and current state of prevention activities involving the Strategic Prevention Framework 5-step process in selection, implementation, and evaluation of sustainable prevention activities. Candidate must have experience performing basic intermediate technology functions such as email management, online data entry, and electronic file storage on computer, Internet research, MS OFFICE programs, and operation of multi-media presentation equipment. Experience successfully working with a culturally diverse group of college age youth and adults. Requires demonstrated successful experience working a team setting as both a leader and a team member.

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Abilityto be detailed orientated in documenting activities and reports to a supervisor any problems as they arise. Requires highly effective interpersonal oral and public communication and skills. Bilingual candidates requested.

MENTAL AND APTITUDE REQUIREMENTS: Ability to maintain a calm professional environment while dealing with problem solving and varied group dynamics. Job requires ability to use analytical, conceptual, problem-solving, planning and decision-making skills on a regular basis. Must have the ability to work effectively and independently with college age students, parents, volunteers, teachers, community leaders and others as well as in small and large groups. Expected to maintain a professional a positive image of BACODA to members of the college/university community and the community at large.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. Physical exertion includes bending and pushing. Must be able to move or lift approx. 20 pounds (i.e. a laptop in a case with files, etc.). Visual and auditory acuity needed within professionally determined normal ranges, with correction if needed. Must be able to travel, enter and exit a vehicle without assistance.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Regular access to reliable transportation, have a valid Texas driver’s license and vehicle insurance. Must comply with a criminal background check and a pre-employment drug screening.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: School/office/group room setting. Travel required for training, presentations, coalition activities and staffing. Standard work hours are expected for this position; however, to achieve program goals it will be necessary at times for employee to work evenings and weekends as well as some overnight travel.
