A MESSAGE FROM THE CHIEF

Scott Thompson

I will be out on vacation June 2nd though the 19th and unfortunately will not be in attendance at the volunteer meeting this month. I promise that I will think of all of you while I am enjoying a little sun and the ocean.

With the snowpack still looming in the higher terrain we face the strong possibility of flooding. As we get later into the season the possibility of having a warm spell coupled with warm nights could set the stage for extreme run-off. Please have heightened awareness during any situation that we may be asked to respond to and plan your actions, we should never react without a plan. Our safety is paramount and working in and around our rivers exposes our people to very real dangers. Please be safe and cautious during the entire water season.

On May 19th we began interviewing for the position of EMS Director. We have been very fortunate to have several very qualified applicants. We have offered the position to a very qualified and experienced gentleman currently out of the Flagstaff area. I am in the process of making an employment offer and hopefully acceptance by the applicant before making this official.

We will be changing work days and schedules for Jerry and Brooke, this enables weekend coverage. Jerry will begin a 4 day work week during June which will include weekend days. Also Brooke has agreed to move to a schedule that will give us the advantage of daytime coverage on weekends. Neither job duties nor responsibilities will change just individual schedules. This will help us with coverage as we enter into our busy season.

SAFETY MESSAGE

CHALLENGE

Driving is one of the most dangerous tasks for firefighters. Despite our intensive efforts to increase our safety awareness, there are firefighters who do not wear seatbelts. In too many tragedies, we find that wearing the seat belt could have saved a life. Let’s join and take the pledge!

DISCUSSION

·  Do you buckle up prior to leaving the station every time, if not, why not?

·  Do you feel comfortable asking a team mate to buckle up?

·  How doest the department handle seat belt violations?

·  Have you signed the pledge, if not, why not?

The greatest asset of the fire service is our people; protect them!

EMS NEWS

Jim Garner

It appears that summer is finally approaching; this means that school is out and increased outdoor activities for children. With that in mind, reviewing treatment for pediatric trauma is in order. If you have any questions or concerns come in and talk with the ALS staff. Also June is CPR refresher and re- certification. Those of you needing to recert, see Rock for the code to complete the online course, then print certificate and bring to skills session. All members are required to attend CPR refresher twice a year. EMS training this month is CPR refresher and re-certification.
