PACE Mathematics Skills Assessment

Question:What is the Mathematics Skills Assessment?

Answer:It is anassessmentthat is designed to appropriately place you into mathematics classes. It should not be thought of as a test with a “grade.” Words like “pass” and “fail” do not apply here.

Question:Who needs to take the assessment?

Answer:The Mathematics Skills Assessmentmust be taken by all students who do not have 3 college-level mathematics transfer credits accepted by Barry University.

Question:When must you take the assessment?

Answer:You musttake it during your first semester (Session A or B) at Barry University.

Question:What does the assessmentconsist of and how long does it take?

Answer:The Mathematics Skills Assessmentconsists of 35 multiple choice questions which you will have one hour to answer.A battery-powered calculator is allowed.

Question:What will the Assessment tell me?

Answer:The score will determine whether you are ready for College Mathematics:

Question:When will I find out what I scored?

Answer:Your advisor will be informed of your score in less than a week.

Question:Can you show me some sample questions?

Answer:Of course. Your PACE Advisor will be happy to give you a sample test that can be taken home and studied.

Answer:The table below shows the breakdown of the 35 questions.

Question:Can I retake the test?

Answer:Yes, students may sign the NOTIFICATION form and retake the exam. Your PACE Advisor can help you with this.

Question:What if I need help with some of the problems on the Practice Assessment Test?

Answer:Main Campus students can utilize The Mathematics Laboratory of the Glenn Hubert Learning Center in Garner 107. The Math Lab is open Monday-Saturday. Experienced tutors will patiently help you with any questions you may have. You may attend as many tutoring sessions as you need. Barry does not charge a fee for tutoring services and appointments are not necessary. Please call 305-899-3364 for more information. (Students at satellite locations have a tutor available one day a week at their location.)

Question:Even if I score less than 21 on the test, am I allowed to take MAT-106 or MAT-154?

Answer:Yes, students may sign the DECLARATION form and take MAT-106 or MAT-154. Students who have signed this form are stronglyadvised to never miss a single math class and to attend weekly tutoring sessions. Your ACE Advisor can help you with this option.
