For the last two years Barnwell has employed flexibility with the itinerant Art, Music and PE positions earned from Fulton County. Instead of having itinerant teachers come to Barnwell one or two days each week, we have “traded in” these positions and purchased a Professional Learning Coach. This creative use of resources ensured that students are able to attend a specials class each day, while also providing teachers with a daily common planning period and instructional support. This year, Fulton County is requiring all schools interested in this budget flexibility to proceed through the RFF process.
We are again requesting this flexibility in trading in our itinerant Art, Music and PE positions to purchase an additional 5th grade teacher to effectively lower class size (from 30 to 24 students in each class). While we do not expect to exceed the state maximum of 33 students in Art or Music classes, this model does increase the amount of students slightly in grades that will have 6 or more teachers. For next year, this will only impact our 1st, 3rd and possibly Kindergarten classes. In 1st and 3rd we expect to have 24 students attend Art/Music/STEM each day (48 in PE) while in Kindergarten we expect to have 22 students attend Art/Music/STEM (44 in PE). These expected numbers (24 and 22 students) are well below the maximum limit (33).
