  • Carers Rights Day 2016:

Date: Friday 25 November 2016. Put the day on your agenda!

Venue: Trinity Church, 15 Nether St, London N12 7NN

Timings: 10:00am to 3:30pm (Registration will start from 9:45am)

This year’s theme will be ‘Missing Out? Know your rights as a Carer’ and our event will bring informative talks and presentations on supportive services on mental health, dementia, flu vaccinations and pharmacies support. If you would like to chill out or relax a little bit, you can also take part in a group meditation session at the end of the event.

Lunch will be provided.

  • Young Carers Awareness Day

Date: Thursday 26th January 2016. Put the day on your agenda!

Venue: St Paul’s Centre Hall, 50 Long Lane, Finchley, N3 2PU

Timings: 4.00 – 5.30 pm First session (for 5 to 11 years old)

5:30 –7.00 pm Second session (for 12 – 17 years old)

This year’s theme of ‘Dreams and aspirations’ will be celebrated through a wide range of activities including guest speakers, games and fun activities. Refreshments provided.

  1. Meditation Sessions Starting Again in December

Please note that the Meditation Session run at the Carers Centre on the second Friday of every month from 10am to 11.30am will resume on 9th December 2016.

  1. After Loss: Bereavement Support Group

This is a support group for the Jewish Community that aims to provide support for people who have lost a partner. Meetings take place fortnightly in a warm Jewish environment and is based on Jewish traditions. Time: 1 -2.30pm. Age Group: 60+

  1. Reminder of Legal Advice Sessions

Would you benefit from advice on one of the following care-related areas: Wills, Estate Administration, Inheritance Tax, Care Home Issues, Later Life Planning, Court of Protection and Powers of Attorney? If the answer is yes you may want to book a 15 minute private and confidential slot with our volunteer solicitor, who offers legal advice on these areas (she is also flexible on offering advice on other issues too). Further sessions will be on:

Each 15 minute slot can be booked between 10 and 12 Noon at Barnet Carers Centre.

  1. Its Barnet Business Campaign

Have you heard about Barnet Carers Centre’s ‘It’s Barnet’s Business Campaign’?

‘It’s Barnet’s Business’ is about working together with local businesses to identify and support more carers in Barnet as well as offering discounts for their services to registered carers who hold a carers’ discount card.

To get your card all you need to do is to complete an application form which is available on our website or from the centre and return it with a passport sized photo and stamped address envelope. We will process your card within 14 days.

Please note that to be eligible for the discount card you should be registered with Barnet Carers Centre, so if you are a Carer and have not been registered yet please contact the Adult Carers Team on 020 8343 9698.

  1. Volunteer vacancies available

If you are interested in volunteering with us, there are exciting volunteering roles available for you to apply. Please see below for details:

Volunteer role / Duties
Volunteer Trustees / You will help to influence and shape the direction of the Charity. We are looking for professionals in finance, business administration, law, fundraising, grant applications, IT or home care and have between 4-5 hours to spare per month including attending six meetings per year
Volunteer Tutors / Assisting young carers to do better with their school work. We are looking for qualified teachers, teaching assistants, university students and sixth form students.
Complimentary Therapist Volunteer / We are looking for qualified complementary Therapists offering complementary therapists such as Aromatherapy, Massage, Reflexology, Manicure, Reiki Healing or Spiritual Healing
Fundraising Volunteer / Supporting Barnet Carers Centre Fundraising Activities. You may just want to help with specific fundraising events or if you wish to make a regular commitment you can become a member of our Fundraising Team.
Outreach Support Volunteer / Representing BCC at external networking events, being an Ambassador and promoting carers rights.
GP Outreach Volunteer / Visiting GP Practices to raise awareness, identify and support carers and establish referral links with the Centre.

  1. Action on Hearing Loss ‘Hear to Meet’ and ‘Hear to Help’ groups

Action on hearing Loss is running ‘Hear to Meet’ groups and ‘Hear to Help’ services all over the Barnet Area.

'Hear to Meet' are groups aimed at those with a hearing loss. Various talks and activities are organised so people do not feel socially excluded, making sure they have an opportunity to discuss their concerns about coping with hearing loss, or it can be simply for those wanting information.

'Hear to Help' services offer hearing aid maintenance for people with NHS hearing aids (This includes free batteries, cleaning the mould and replacement tubing).

  1. Photojournalism and Documentary Photograph Project:

We have been approached by one of the employees at Turn2us, a charity that helps people in financial hardship gain access to welfare benefits, charitable grants and support services, who is in the process of implementing a project as part of her MA in Photojournalism and Documentary Photography that aims to represent with photographs the nature of the relationship between a carer and the person they provide practical and emotional support to as well as give a voice to the carers and show the work that they do.

  1. Talks for Carers

The following talk is coming up as part of the Carers Coffee Morning (every Thursday from 10.30 am to 12.30pm):

  • 17th November – Come on Board talk from Amy Edgar (Transport for London). This talk will focus on supporting disabled people make effective use of the London’s transport system.
  • 29th December – Adult Carer Support Services at the Royal Free Hospital(Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust. Alison Bowman). This talk will focus on a new support service that will be open at the Royal Free Hospital for people affected by long term conditions.
