Jack R. Barber

BARBER, Jack R. - of Kalamazoo, MI, formerly of Flint. Jack died May 13, 2011 in the comfort of his home and surrounded by his family, concluding a fully-lived, six-year period of treatment for pancreatic cancer. He was the loving husband of Patti Sholler-Barber, with whom he shared a storybook marriage of 20 years. Born and raised in Flint, Jack was an adored son of Linnie and Dorothy Barber, the cherished brother of David and Jill Barber (Woodruff), and the beloved dad of Mark and Steve Barber. He was the treasured stepdad of Matt and Whitney Sholler and a dear grandpa of Steve and Jack Barber. Jack was a comical, good-natured uncle to his nieces and nephews and a much loved friend to many. For 44 years, he ran his own successful business. Famous for his wide smile and strong hugs, Jack was a fair-minded man who lived joyfully with good will toward all. He loved the company of his family and friends, especially over good food and drink. Jack delighted in current events and politics, travel, crossword puzzles, workouts and banter with his buddies at the Y, CBS Sunday Morning, cars, music, concerts, films and novels. A celebration of his life will be hosted by the family at his home on Saturday, July 16 from 4 to 6 p.m. In lieu of flowers, those desiring may make donations in Jack's name to the Patti Sholler-Barber "The Power of One" College Scholarship Fund at the Otsego Public Schools Foundation, PO Box 251, Otsego, MI 49078 or the YMCA of Greater Kalamazoo, 1001 W. Maple, Kalamazoo, MI 49008.
