Second Sunday in Ordinary Time

January 14th, 2018

Significant details that are not part of today’s reading reveal a vital part of Samuel’s experience. The verse tells us that Samuel’s mentor, Eli, is an elder whose "eyes had lately grown so weak that he could not see" (verse 2). Eli’s external blindness contracts with his vivid, inner seeing. When Samuel thinks his mentor is calling him, Eli tells the youth to go back to sleep. Finally, Eli realizes God is calling Samuel. Usually this passage focuses on Samuel’s response. However, Eli’s wisdom is a vital component. Samuel would not have perceived his calling had it not been for his aged mentor. Eli epitomizes the gifts God bestows to elders with strong faith, and the ability to see what lies beneath the surface. Eli’s ripened youth misinterprets. Let us give thanks for the elders in our communities who bring wisdom to us.

Sr. Joyce Rupp, O.S.M.
