Icon of the Holy Family:

Emly September 12th, 13th14th.

Pope Francis has honoured Ireland by choosing Dublin as the venue for the world gathering of families in 2018. In this way he honours the rich history of stable family life in our country, he is also aware that in recent decades family life has faced a lot of new challenges. It is his prayer that this world event will help family life at home and abroad.

A newly written icon of the Holy Family will visit all the dioceses of Ireland between now and next August. Cashel diocese is the first to receive the Icon. We are invited to stand before the icon and look and interact with it. It stands 5 foot tall; the main centre panel depicts the Holy Family in a splendid gold background. There are two side panels one depicts the wedding of Cana and in the other Jesus heals Jairus daughter.

Catholics in the east always used icon as an aid to prayer. They sat and looked at their beautiful icons and interacted with them. We in the west were taught to pray by being quiet and listen. When you visit the icon please pray the eastern way. Look at it, as you do so let it provoke you to prayer and reflection. Note how serene, gentle and orderly each figure is presented. The genius of the icon it that it leads us to the mystery underneath the living event depicted. It points us to the grace that sustained the Holy Family and in turn sustains each and every family.

The pope writes “In the family three words need to be used. I want to repeat this! Three words: “Please” “Thank you”,” Sorry”. Three essential words.”

Mass each evening at 8pm. Church open from 9 AM to 10 PM. Organised visits by school groups during the school day. You are welcome to visit at any time.
