The Baha'i community was founded in 19th century Persia, and is one of the newest world religions, emphasizing the spiritual unity of all humankind. Many of the members in Rancho Cucamonga are Persian, so you will get the great opportunity to learn about Persian culture and food. The Baha'i have a peaceful approach to politics and relationships. They are deeply committed to serving the community and the volunteer will be joining them in some of their service work, including children's programming, teen girl's empowerment, and work with older adults. In addition, the volunteer may also work with other religious communities to assist with their service to the community. A central part of the summer experience will be learning about the Baha'i tradition. You will have a chance to study with some of the Baha'i members so that the volunteer can understand why they do what they do. The learning is not for the purpose of conversion but to build appreciative knowledge and understanding of this tradition. Volunteers will live on La Verne’s campus for the summer.

Camp Myrtlewood

Location: 49658 Myrtle Creek Road, Myrtle Point, Oregon 97458.

Website: http://campmyrtlewood.org/

Camp Myrtlewood is a full-service camp in the costal mountains of Oregon. Volunteers live in cabins and work “behind-the-scenes” doing cooking, cleaning and maintenance. There are weekly camps (mostly children and youth, and some adult and intergenerational camps). The camp is in a beautiful setting in Oregon, and is a camp associated with the Church of the Brethren. No experience is required. All staff are trained. As stated by the Camp Directors, it is important that camp staff be responsible, flexible, have a positive attitude, a good work ethic, a willingness to serve, and a tolerance and open mind toward different people. The challenges of working at Camp Myrtlewood include long hours of hard physical work cooking and cleaning, in a rural mountain setting. It is helpful to be capable of working long hours on your feet, and to work well in a team, getting along with others. You will not be a camp counselor, but a member of the "hosting team." You clean cabins, bathrooms, dining hall, and kitchen. You will prepare meals from scratch, feed campers, clean up and start over!!! Attention to detail is important and a willingness to take constructive criticism. The overall goal is to create a clean and welcoming space so that the campers may relax and enjoy their event.

The camp staff works as a team to get the work done and at the end of the day you may be tired, but you will feel a sense of accomplishment, especially after hearing all the complements from campers about how great the food is! One very important part of the job is the positive interaction with campers, especially children. It is important to know that everything you do and say is teaching them about how to live in harmony with the environment and with each other. Some of the activities available for workers on their days off include hiking, swimming, or reading a book under a tree. It is a good opportunity to develop a relationship with nature and take advantage of time for personal or spiritual growth. Cell phone reception is available but you may have to walk to a high point for it to work. Also, internet access is limited, but available.
