Badminton Basics-grips and shots

1.  Grip in badminton-

Forehand grip, shake hands, index finger on higher end, thumb touches middle finger

Backhand grip , apply a pinching grip, thumb in flat surface of the grip, keep index finger and thumb in the same level.

Hold your racket lightly. Use forehand on right side of body, backhand on left side if right handed.

2.  Serve shot- forehand high serve, is to hit the shuttle high and deep to the end line of the

opponents court. (swing is directed more under and up). Forehand low serve, purpose is to hit the shuttle lightly above the net passing through the short service line of the opponents side. (swing is directed more side or horizontal level ). Backhand low serve, purpose is to hit the shuttle lightly above the net level passing through the short service line of the opponents side.

Backhand flick serve, purpose is to hit the shuttle high and deep to the back double service line of the opponent side. (snap or flick wrist)

3.  Clear shot-purpose is to hit the shuttle high and deep from one end to the other end of the court. It is to force the opponent to the back of the court so you have a better opportunity to hit a winning shot.

4.  Drop shot-purpose is to hit the shuttle steep from the back side of the court to the front court, before the service line of the opponents side. It is to force the opponent to move from the back of the court to the front so you have an opportunity to place that winning shot.

5.  Smash shot-purpose is to hit the shuttle with full power and steep angle toward the opponent side. It is the most powerful shot and the best way to hit the winning shot.

6.  Drive shot-purpose is to hit the shuttle flat, fast and powerful. It is to put pressure on the opponent, to give them less time to react.

7.  Lifting shot-purpose is to hit the shuttle high and deep from the front court to the back side of the court. (hit under and hit upward, flicking)

8.  Net shot-purpose is to hit the shuttle lightly and tightly to the net. It’s is to make the opponent to run from the back court to the front, also to force the opponent to move to give you an attack shot. (position is close to the net, lightly hitting the shuttle just over the net, taking the opponents side to side).

9.  Backhand shot-purpose is to hit the shuttle when you are under pressure and the shuttle is hit to the back corner, or when you have less time to react. Puts you off balance, and in a difficult position. You may apply this shot to your opponent to gain advantage.
