Introduction

It is imperative that you read through the whole of this booklet before you start to complete Section 1.

This reflective log will support your learning and development throughout your placement(s) and forms part of the pass criteria for your placement year.

Your reflections need to demonstrate that you have met the following learning outcomes. The questions in this booklet and the structure of it will support you in achieving this.

·  Identify and deploy professional behaviours, including integrity and ethical practice to achieve defined objectives in the workplace and to achieve personal success.

·  Assess and evaluate the opportunities and challenges facing your placement organisation and the importance of your role and professional contribution with respect to this.

·  Apply relevant aspects of academic learning to your current role and work environment in support of the organisational priorities and objectives.

·  Reflect on your placement learning and development to update your PPDP (Personal and professional development plan) ensuring that you identify life and career goals and what you need to do to achieve these within defined timescales.

There is no need to print this document. Simply type directly into it and submit via the Blackboard site:

Log in to https://shuspace.shu.ac.uk/ and select the Placement Year module site 17/18. In the 'Assignment Submission' on the left panel, choose the appropriate submission and attach your file then upload it.

It is recommended that you keep a detailed account/portfolio of your placement activities (projects you've been working on, your achievements, people you've worked with etc) you will need to refer back to this at a later date.

Languages students: It is compulsory that you complete your reflective log in your target language. You will receive feedback on your use of your target language.

First Submission - Section 1 - One month into your placement

ENSURE THAT YOU SUBMIT THE FIRST SUBMISSION PRIOR TO YOUR FORMAL REVIEW AND NO LATER THAN THE 31ST OF JANUARY. (Your Work Experience Mentor will refer to this when they conduct your formal review, so please ensure it is submitted to Blackboard at least 1 week before your formal review so that your WEM has chance to read it)

The first few weeks on placement, are a period of transition, where you start to build relationships with your colleagues, develop a clear understanding of your role and responsibilities and settle into your professional work environment.

Reflect on your first month on placement and answer each of the following questions.
- What observations have you made about professional attributes and behaviour in your place of work?
- How does this reflect the values and culture of the organisation?
- What impact do these attributes and behaviours have on you and your colleagues' ability to achieve their set objectives and personal goals? (250 - 500 words)

Reflecting on your experiences so far and within the context of your role and future aspirations, set 5 SMART learning and development goals for the next 3 months. It is recommended that you seek the input of your line manager/colleagues and align these to any internal reviews/progress meetings/appraisals you are having.
