YOUTH LEADERSHIP AND INITIATIVE:

It’s helpful to assign roles to the students interested in starting an AYEA chapter, including:

-Recruiter: responsible for sending out emails, texts and other announcements to remind people about meeting times

-Facilitator: responsible for keeping the group on track with the meeting agenda and helping delegate roles for any projects the group decides to undertake

-Note-taker: responsible for typing up and sending out notes to the members and AYEA staff

-Chapters can also choose to create their own leadership structure (ex: President, Vice President, Secretary, etc.)

FUNDING AND MATERIALS:

We recommend having a rotating schedule for members to volunteer to bring snacks and drinks to meetings. We also recommend that chapters talk to adult mentors to find local funding! Neighbors, family, local groups, or even your school might be able to pitch in.

If you cannot fund the chapter locally, AYEA has very limited funds available for chapter groups. These funds can be used to purchase materials for an approved project or event, print posters, or for some other discrete needs. Funds should not go towards paying for a space to meet in, purchasing excessive amounts of food or drinks for meetings, or for other unapproved purchases.

To get funds from AYEA, ask AYEA staff via email about the purchase you want to make. After making the purchase, snap a photo of the receipt and email or text AYEA staff. Refunds will be sent as a check via mail to the person that made the purchase.

OTHER IMPORTANT NOTES:

Alaska Youth for Environmental Action is a program of the Alaska Center. For more information about AYEA, go to For more information about the Alaska Center visit

AYEA does not engage in electoral politics. We are fully supportive of voting and being politically involved, but chapter groups should not endorse politicians or identify as AYEA members when volunteering with politician’s campaigns.

AYEA has 2 statewide trainings held each year to help teens improve their leadership skills and knowledge of current environmental issues. The first training, the Youth Organizing Summit, is held in fall typically in a location near Anchorage. Ask AYEA staff when applications open. The second training is held in March in Juneau. Applications will be available on the AYEA website in January.
