PHYSICAL EDUCATION HANDBOOK

A physically educated person is one who has mastered the necessary movement skills to participate confidently in many different forms of physical activity; one who values physical fitness and understands that both are related to health and well being.

The vision is for all students to be physically educated and have fun while moving. Students who choose to actively participate in quality physical education programs receive a variety of benefits, including the development of:

  1. A variety of motor skills and abilities related to lifetime leisure activities
  2. Improved understanding of the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle
  3. Improved understanding of movement and the human body
  4. Improved knowledge of rules and strategies of particular games and sports
  5. Self-confidence and self-worth as they relate to physical education recreation programs.

STUDENT OUTCOMES

  1. Students will develop competency in many movement activities.
  2. Students will understand how and why they move in a variety of situations and use this information to enhance their own skills.
  3. Students will achieve and maintain a health-enhancing level of physical fitness.
  4. Students will exhibit a physically active lifestyle and will understand that physical activity provides opportunities for enjoyment, challenge and self-expression.
  5. Students will demonstrate responsible personal behavior while participating in movement activities.
  6. Students will demonstrate responsible social behavior while participating in movement activities. Students will understand the importance of respect for others.
  7. Students will understand the relationship between history, culture and games.

DISTRICT PHYSICAL EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS FOR GRADUATION

In accordance with Commissioner’s Regulations (135.4(c)(3)Attendance), “All pupils shall attend and participate in the physical education program as approved in the school plan for physical education and as indicated by physicians' examinations and other tests approved by the Commissioner of Education. Individual medical certificates of limitations must indicate the area of the program in which the pupil may participate.”

All students shall have earned the equivalent of two units of credit in physical education in accordance with the requirements set forth in section 135.4(c)(2)(ii).

In accordance with Commissioner’s Regulations 135.4(c)(1), “There shall be activities adapted to meet the needs of pupils who are temporarily or permanently unable to participate in the regular program of physical education. Adaptive physical education programs shall be taught by a certified physical education teacher.”

LOCKER ROOM POLICY

  1. No climbing on or over walls, lockers, or bathroom stalls.
  2. No gum, food, or drink allowed.
  3. Boots, sneakers with wheels, and street shoes are to taken off before you enter the gym. Only sneakers are allowed.
  4. Lockers are to be kept clean and clutter free. All items should be inside locker. Door should close tightly.
  5. No glass containers will be allowed.
  6. Cleats are not allowed. They are to be removed outside.
  7. Any items left in the locker room will be taken to the lost and found. If not claimed, they will be given to “good will”.
  8. Locks and lockers are the property of the school. There will be periodic locker checks.
  9. Enter gym and go straight into locker room. If you have boots or shoes they must come off before entering gym.

GYMNASIUM RULES

  1. No climbing bleachers.
  2. Stay out from underneath the bleachers when bleachers are in the open position.
  3. No balls should be kicked, thrown or hit with a force that would harm a person or damage the facilities. (walls, ceiling, lights, etc.)
  4. Only indoor balls are to be used in the gymnasium. Balls that have been used outside are not allowed to be used inside.
  5. No gum, food, or drink allowed.

  7. No climbing, jumping, running, or hanging on wall mats
  8. No hanging off baskets or basketball nets.
  9. The locker room will be kept locked during the day. If a student needs to go to their PE locker during the day, they will have to report to the PE teacher in charge at the time period to ask permission to enter the locker room area.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION ATTIRE

Students are to be dressed in the appropriate attire every day. Athletic shoes with rubber soles and athletic socks are to be worn to class. Athletic shoes need to fit tightly to insure the safety of all students. Athletic shorts or sweat-pants and a T-shirt must be worn each day. When going outside, sweatshirts and rubber spikes may be worn when the activity justifies. School or street clothes (worn either under or over PE attire) is not acceptable attire for Physical Education class. Students without proper attire are subject to being a non-participant.

STUDENT EXPECTATIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Attend class daily dressed out in the proper PE attire.
  2. Get to class and roll call on time. (Be prompt)
  3. Complete all class responsibilities and required work.
  4. Be responsible for all medical excuses. Give all medical notes/excuses to the school nurse at the beginning of the school day.
  5. Keep the PE area clean and respect all facilities and equipment.
  6. Obtain prior permission before missing a class for school-related business.
  7. All PE students shall remain in the designated PE area until the passing bell rings at the end of the period. Any student outside of the designated PE area will be in violation of classroom rules and will be marked “cut” for that period.
  8. All accidents and/or injuries should be reported to the teacher regardless of how minor the accident and/or injury seems to be.
  9. Students may only use locks purchased from the school for their PE locker.

EXCUSED ABSENCE & MAKE UP POLICY

Excused absences must be made up if a student wants to receive credit. Unexcused absences and unexcused tardies cannot be made up. The ACS Physical Education Department offers opportunities for excused absence/medical makeup during the school tutorial period. Students may make up timed runs, missed activity days, assignments, and missed tests. Students must arrange make up assignments / days with their individual teacher. All make ups must be completed within 1 week of absence.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION ATTENDANCE / MEDICAL POLICY

All Medical Excuses must be given to the school nurse at the beginning of the school day. The school nurse will make and distribute copies to appropriate teacher(s). Any student not participating in Physical Education class for 10 weeks (non)continuous within the school year will not be eligible to receive credit. 10 weeks of PE classes is equivalent to 25 classes.

  1. Parental Excuse
  2. A parent/nurse may excuse a student for one day. If necessary, an excuse may be written consecutively for up to 1 calendar week.
  3. Students excused and missing 1 to 3PE classesmust make up the classes missed within 1 week.
  4. Physician’s Excuse:
  5. Up to one week: Same as parental excuse.
  6. Up to and including four weeks: The school nurse will fax the doctor / parent the PE (Medical) Recommendation Form. This will be completed by the doctor and kept on file with the school nurse in case of the student being excused for more than four weeks. During this time the student will be required to complete an Alternate Physical Education (Medical) Contract.
  7. Five weeks or more (including “further notice”): The school nurse will fax the doctor / parent the PE (Medical) Recommendation Form. Student shall receive their Physical Education in accordance with thoserecommendations. A teaching assistant may be provided, working directly under the supervision of the PE teacher, in order to provide for the student requiring adaptive PE. If a student is receiving rehabilitation as part of their physician’s order, this may count as part of their PE requirement with the proper paperwork. If a student is unable to physically participate in any manner, that student will not receive Physical Education credit. The student will be required to retake the course next year. The student may be able to double up on Physical Education credit if their schedule allows.
  8. The Physical Education (Medical) Recommendation Form and the Alternate Physical Education (Medical) Contract Form can be downloaded from the Avoca Central School Website.
