Lesson:

  1. Using a document camera, students will view photographs from the September 11th attacks
  2. Photos will include the twin towers, pentagon, ground zero, public response, etc.
  3. The student will examine and analyze the photographs on a sheet of notebook paper
  4. Student will write words that come to mind, memories, feelings, etc.
  5. Using a document camera, the student will view and synthesize oral histories that have been written by survivors and adults about their memories of September 11th
  6. The student will examine these oral histories and record on his/her notebook paper memories and feelings he/she also experienced
  7. The student will create a personal account of his/her memories from September 11, 2001.
  8. This account will be non-fiction
  9. The student will use computer lab computers to type and print his/her oral history
  10. The student will orally share his/her September 11th experience
  11. Student accounts will be compiled into a class set of student oral histories of September 11, 2001

The document camera will be used in the lesson to provide images and written accounts of the September 11th attacks for students to view, analyze, and synthesize. The document camera will serve as a valuable instrument so that students can have the most accurate representations of our recent history, rather than rough copies on the overhead. This lesson is incredibly important, because this age group of students may have been the most affected by the September 11th attacks. It is necessary that this generation’s memories be kept for future students to examine. I can think of no better time to conduct a project to this extent, seven years after the event, to help preserve our history as accurately as possible.

Thank you for this opportunity,
