Autumn Term 2016 Newsletter

Year3 –Mr Worsa and Mrs Hughes

Literacy
Our literacy outcomes will cover fiction and non-fiction texts and will all be linked into our Journey narrative story. The text types covered this term will be stories, letters and biographies.Later in the term we will look at some well know stories from the Victorian era. We don’t want to give too much away, as this will emerge through the narrative!
In Year 3, we have weekly library slots when we go to the library to exchange books, share book and magazine news and talk about reading and stories. 3JW visit the library on a Thursday and 3SH on a Tuesday, so library books should always be returned on that day.
Children should be reading at home every day – on their own and/or to an adult. Please write a note in their reading record when they read to you. We would like to encourage you to continue reading to your child as this allows them to access more sophisticated stories than they might be able to read on their own. Please ask if you would like any guidance about this.
In Year 3, we teach spelling every day. This involves consolidating phonics knowledge or learning about spelling patterns and rules. We will also continue to develop our cursive handwriting style. / Maths
Our focus maths target for this half term will be around counting and place value. By the end of year 3, children should be able to count on and back from any number up to 1000. They should also further develop their understanding of how a number is made up e.g. 134 is 100 + 30+ 4 and its relative size.
The children will also be developing their strategies for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division and will be learning their times tables. The expectation is that the majority of children should alreadybe secure in their 2x, 5x, and 10x and will have learnt their 3x, 4x and 8x tables by the end of Year 3.
The children will receive their Mathletics passwords which may well be the same as last year.We will regularly set tasks for them to complete and you can support your child by encouraging them to take part in Live Mathletics toincrease fluency of recall and develop mental methods. Most children should start at level 1. If your child is making very good progress at this level, they can move on to the next one. Please let us know if your child is unable to access the internet at home. The web address for Mathletics is:
