August 2008 Synagogue Etz Chayim, 7705 Bailey Cove Rd. Huntsville, AL 35803 Av 5767
We are thrilled to welcome student Rabbi Jill Levy to Etz Chayim.
Up Close & Personal with Rabbinic student Jill Levy: Jill is entering her third year as a Rabbinical Student at the Jewish Theological Seminary. She has served as a Gabbai for Kehilat Hadar, at Camp Ramah Darom, and has lead services at JTS. Her synagogue skills include: leading all aspects of Shabbat and weekday services, leyning Torah, and preparing sermons. She has also worked as a Jewish educator for both children and young adults at Camp Ramah Darom, Hebrew School, on birthright Israel trips, and for young adults in the Atlanta Jewish community. In addition, this summer she will be a Student Chaplain at St. Luke’s Hospital in Houston, TX. On a personal note, Jill grew up and worked in the south. She is very excited about joining our “family” for the coming year.
Please give her a warm welcome when you meet her.
I hope that everyone is enjoying the few weeks left of summer. School starts just around the corner.
Additionally, Holly Kent is organizing the list for hosting the Rabbi Kiddush Luncheons for the upcoming year. Please call her at 539-8302 to volunteer to help. This can be done as a team effort!!
Please mark your calendars. On Monday, September 15th, at 7 p.m. at the synagogue, we will have our Sisterhood Membership Kickoff meeting. More information to follow.
Enjoy the rest of the summer, and see you in September!
Shalom,
Sue Paddock

Lisa Lapidus, Sandy Pepper and I are excited to announce that we are the co-directors of Religious School this year! We are having a wonderful time planning the year and it promises to be a very rich and rewarding experience for students and their families alike. First of all, we are starting out the year with a Home Run! The first day of Religious School is going to be a picnic and softball game! Parents and Teachers will be right in there with the students! The midweek Hebrew Program for our fifth, sixth and seventh graders will begin the following Wednesday. This program focuses on preparing our students for their B’nai Mitzvot.
Another new experience will be “Family Boker Or’s” throughout the year and Family Education! Kids, your parents and younger siblings will be learning right along with you! We have some great ideas for the special programming, such as back to the Sukka for Family Dinners at Sukkot and innovations in Purim Carnivals that will stir up the fun like you won’t believe! We are going to plant lots of trees at Tu B’Shevat! And we are going to again celebrate Chanukah at Congregation Etz Chayim this year.
There is a new Education Fellow this year from the Goldring Woldenberg Institute of Southern Jewish Life. Her name is Samantha (Sammi) Gannon. This lovely young woman will be coming in to Huntsville to meet us all three times this year, beginning August 15, 16 and 17.
Our religious school uses the curriculum that has been created by the ISJL education department. We were one of the first congregations to use the prototype curriculum five years ago. This is the first year that the curriculum is considered “finished”.It is the responsibility of the Education Fellows to work with our directors and teachers helping us to implement the curriculum and do a great job teaching our children. Whenever we have questions, we can call Sammi as we could with our Fellows that preceded her and get instant help and encouragement. Parents, we are getting you involved in a big way this year! How fun and exciting for us all to have you at Religious School working right alongside your children and seeing their Jewishness taught to them in a fun and organized way.
Shalom, Chavarim!

Tot Shabbat
I hope that everyone has been enjoying the Summer season. It always feels so good to anticipate that time when we can plan for vacations and once they are over, we have to begin planning for the next season. For me, that season will be our Tot Shabbat Saturday mornings. I have begun to think about my little friends and how much they have grown since we were all together in May. It will be fun to see them again in September. We will have our first Tot Shabbat on Saturday, September 20th from 10:00-11:30am. Of course, this will be a celebration for Rosh Hashanah, and, a new season for us all to grow and learn!
Some of my friends will have grown so much over this year that they may be entering my Kindergarten class for Religious School.
See you all soon!
