SPH Researchers’ backgrounds

Jamie Bartram, PhD

Don and Jennifer Holzworth Distinguished Professor, Environmental Sciences and Engineering; Director, The Water Institute

Dr. Bartram’s interests focus on the connections between water (including sanitation and hygiene) and health – especially the links between science, policy and practice, in both developing and developed countries. They include technologies for urban sanitation renewal; management systems for drinking-water safety and rural drinking-water supply; emerging issues (including water scarcity and climate change) and their impacts on system sustainability; health system activities on water and sanitation; and sector capacity issues such as monitoring, the costs and impacts of interventions and effective regulation and financing.

Gregory Characklis, PhD

Professor, Environmental Sciences and Engineering; Director, Center for Watershed Science and Management, UNC Institute for the Environment

Dr. Characklis’s primary research interests involve developing solutions to environmental challenges through systems-based approaches that integrate engineering and economic principles. Specific areas of interest include development of improved strategies for managing water supply and treatment systems, exploration of economic and environmental tradeoffs in hydropower generation, and the management of environmental financial risks.

Wayne Rosamond, PhD, MS

Professor, Epidemiology; Adjunct Professor, Emergency Medicine

Dr. Rosamond has been an active investigator and teacher in cardiovascular disease epidemiology for over 20 years with research interests in community based surveillance studies and registries of coronary heart disease, heart failure and stroke. He is also involved in studies of the etiology of myocardial infarction, heart failure, sudden cardiac death, venous thromboembolism, and stroke. He is co-principal investigator with the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) study through its Coordinating Center and serves as Chair of ARIC's Surveillance Committee. Dr. Rosamond is currently principal investigator for the North Carolina Collaborative Acute Stroke Registry—a Paul Coverdell National Acute Stroke Registry.

William Vizuete, PhD

Associate Professor, Environmental Sciences and Engineering

Using high performance computers and three dimensional simulations to model the atmosphere, Dr. Vizuete is working to improve our understanding of atmospheric air pollution formation. These computer models help to better our understanding of the extremely complex chemical and physical processes that occur in the atmosphere. A better understanding of the atmosphere gives us the knowledge to improve the tools and methods policy makers use to make effective control strategies to clean the air above our dirtiest cities. What excites Dr. Vizuete most about his research is that he is doing something that makes a real impact on society. Through his work, he is able to provide scientific advice to policy makers who make the decisions that affect the lives of millions of people.
