Applying Newton’s Three Laws of Motion Project

Objectives:

Apply Newton’s three laws of motion to everyday situations.

Project Overview:

In this project, you will apply Newton’s laws of motion to real life activities such as amusement park rides, everyday actions, rockets, sports, and Earth processes.

Requirements:

1)  Find a real life example in which you can describe or demonstrate the application of each of Newton’s laws of motion. You must have one example for each of Newton’s laws:

a.  Newton’s 1st Law – Inertia

b.  Newton’s 2nd Law – Force = Mass X Acceleration

c.  Newton’s 3rd Law – For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction

2)  Magazine pictures/articles, videos, snapshots or demonstrations may be used to display the laws. (You must have your examples approved by your teacher in advance.)

3)  Provide a brief written explanation of how each example illustrates one of the laws. This should be written with the example and NOT on a separate page.

4)  In at least one example, you must calculate speed. The calculation should be next to the example.

5)  In at least one example, you must show both unbalanced and balanced forces. You may show this on the picture/video, etc. with arrows. Clearly label balanced and unbalanced forces.

6)  Make a display of your examples to turn into your teacher for a grade. Your display may be a brochure, poster, video, or power point presentation.

7)  Bibliography – you MUST include a bibliography page citing any sources that you used for information. The bibliography must include the author, title of article, year written, and website used to find the information. {google.com, Wikipedia.com, ask.com are NOT sources! They are search engines that you used to find the websites!}

8)  Present your project to the class in a 2-3 minute presentation.
