eligibility requirements:
Per the Articles of Incorporation, the Board consists of up to 11 Directors, including:
- 9 Citizen Directors of the Board
- 1 Member of City Council, who is a Board Director of the Calgary Housing Company
- The Mayor
Ineligibility:
- No person shall be qualified for election as a director if he:
(i) is less than 18 years of age;
(ii) is a represented adult as defined in the Adult Guardianship and Trustee Act (Alberta) or is the subject of a certificate of incapacity that is in effect under the Public Trustee Act;
(iii) is a formal patient as defined in the Mental Health Act (Alberta) and any statute that may be substituted therefor, as from time to time amended;
(iv) is the subject of an order under The Mentally Incapacitated Persons Act (Alberta) and any statute that may be substituted therefor, as from time to time amended, appointing a committee of his person or estate or both;
(v) has been found to be a person of unsound mind by a court elsewhere than in Alberta;
(vi) is not an individual;
(vii) has the status of bankrupt.
- Subject to the articles, a director need not be a shareholder.
- At least one-quarter of the directors must be resident Canadians.
DESIRED COMPETENCIES:
- Business Development - Management or executive experience with responsibility for identifying value creation opportunities, especially social equity.
- Financial literacy - Ability to read and understand financial reports including balance sheets, income statements and other related financial performance reports.
- Legal acumen – A high level understanding of contract law, real estate and finance. Non-profit sector experience useful.
- Visionary and strategic perspective – Understands and interprets lifestyle, community and housing trends and developments taking place in the Calgary community. A big picture thinker who can go beyond the immediate issues and looks longer term at how people, communities and business will change or evolve, in order to exploit new opportunities to help Calgarians.
- Leadership experience – Proven experience as a leader of an organization, team or initiative. Willing to think creatively, and often successful in inspiring others to follow a different and better course.
- Commitment to and passion for AHCC – Believes in the purpose and activities of the organization, availability of affordable housing, and can serve as an ambassador for the brand in the community. Prepares for and attends board meetings, committee meetings, promotional events.
- Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and a passion for improving the lives of AHCC’s target market and the City of Calgary as a whole.
Time Commitment:
- AHCC’s Board Members will serve a three-year term (confirmed annually at the Shareholder Annual General Meeting) and may serve a maximum of two consecutive terms.
- Board meetings are held approximately bi-monthly.

- Service on AHCC’s Board of Directors is without remuneration.
