GeorgeEugeneBryson,theJournal’sspecialcorrespondentatHavana,cablesthatitisthesecretopinionofmanySpaniardsintheCubancapital,thattheMainewasdestroyedand258menkilledbymeansof marinemineorfixedtorpedo.ThisistheopinionofseveralAmericannavalauthorities.TheSpaniards,itisbelieved,arrangedtohavetheMaineanchoredoveroneoftheharbormines.Wiresconnectedthemineswitha...magazine,anditisthoughttheexplosionwascausedbysendinganelectriccurrentthroughthewire.Ifthiscanbeproven,thebrutalnatureoftheSpaniardswillbeshownbythefactthattheywaitedtospringthemineafterallthemenhadretiredforthenight.TheMaltesecrossinthepictureshowswheretheminemayhavebeenfired.
