Atlas Telecom and BroadSoft VoIP Give Lamp Posts a Voice in Romania

First telecoms service to combine advanced VoIP applications with proven DECT cordless technology

Stockholm, Sweden, VON Europe Spring, 16 May, 2006 – BroadSoft Inc, the leading provider of VoIP application software, today announced that it is working with Romania’s Atlas Telecom to deliver residential VoIP over a fixed-wireless telecoms network using DECT cordless technology. The innovative combination of DECT fixed-wireless infrastructure and the BroadWorks VoIP application platform will enable customers across the country to experience next generation call functionality using proven and affordable technology.

Atlas Telecom is using the SIP-based BroadWorks VoIP application platform in tandem with Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications (DECT) wireless nodes and cordless phones and 802.11 broadband technology to deliver primary line services and premium telephony features to residential and business consumers. The DECT technology delivers the signal up to 200 meters from a base station, each of which is deployed on lamp posts (with approximately 4200 per city planned) to deliver VoIP services. The solution, combining proven technologies, is the first of its kind worldwide and leapfrogs existing infrastructure constraints to deliver the latest features throughout Romania.

“We selected the BroadWorks residential VoIP application platform because it offers the greatest scalability so we can ultimately serve hundreds of thousands of users; it offers a full range of enhanced features that will meet the needs of our users; and it combines the DECT and SIP technologies intelligently to provide the only configuration of its kind in existence,” said Pompiliu Tripa, President of Atlas Telecom Eastern Europe. “In a unique marriage of proven technologies, we are able to both extend the useful life of and continue to extract value from the current infrastructure.”

“I am confident that Atlas Telecom’s feature-rich offering will set a new communications benchmark for Romania and for the region,” said Michael Tessler, President and Chief Executive Officer for BroadSoft. “Within this alternative telecommunications framework, BroadWorks has proven itself compatible with older technologies, an important consideration for regions with similar infrastructure considerations. More importantly though, this implementation demonstrates that VoIP functionality depends not on the latest network technology but on the intelligence in the data centre - this is clearly the driver for creating new value and extracting more out of any communications investment.”

From its position in the Atlas Telecom data centre, BroadWorks is able to provide advanced call features to terminals connected through the IP-based DECT wireless local loop network.

The network, which will have the capacity to reach Romania’s entire addressable telecoms market, is currently undergoing trials and is expected to be in operation by the end of May this year.
