FEE PAID: ______Date:______

T-shirt size- Small Medium Large ExtraLarge

Note:

If you are going to participate in the Group #3 activity (Woodworker's Tool Chest) be aware of the following:

1. The $50 fee will cover the cost of materials for the "basic" chest construction.

This will include the sides, base, top, hinges, clasps, carry pulls and varnish. If a student wants to embellish their project they may purchase other wood or parts.

2. NO POWER TOOLS WILL BE USED BY STUDENTS. The construction of this box will be done in a manner similar to the way it would have been made prior to the early 20th Century. An apprentice woodworker would have been assigned projects to develop their skills but in a practical way. A tool chest would be a good starter assignment since it would involve cutting, use of chisels, measuring and assembly. Once finished the young carpenter could fill his box with the tools needed during his career. (PS - I say "his" but today many young woodworkers are female but at the time mentioned this was the domain of men.)

3. The case produced can be used in any way the owner sees fit. It can be used to store any number of things. It's theirs to keep and I encourage each student to sign and date the inside of the tool chest.

4. The end results need not be perfect! Remember, an apprentice will make mistakes. Strive for the best results you can achieve but realize that errors will occur. Machines and tools available today could make perfect dovetails and if you do decide to get into woodworking you will probably buy these tools but for now you can say that you "hand cut" those dovetails. You can take pride in your accomplishment. The very best woodworkers working today still rely on many very high quality hand tools to get the results they desire.
