RMS READS 2015-2016

At Riversprings Middle School, we have worked hard to make reading a large part of our learning culture. This year, we are seeking to expand that culture by introducing the RMS Reads list and program.

RMS Reads is a list of 60 books. Fifteen of the books will come from the latest Sunshine State Young Reader Award program books (SSYRA) list which we will continue to use each year as we have in the past. These books will changeeach year. Added to these 15 books is a predetermined list of 45 books that have been meticulously selected by a committee of students and faculty. A reading committee comprised of students and faculty will examine the list each year to see if changes need to be made.

Students who read any 15 books from the list and take and pass the AR test between the beginning of school and the deadline in May will be invited to go on the end of the year field trip with Mrs. Yeomans. The deadline will be determined based on the date of the field trip, which is organized at Mrs. Yeoman’s discretion.

Books read for summer reading, with AR tests taken in July 2015, count toward the goal of 15. AR tests taken prior to the first summer reading test date will not be counted toward the goal of 15. Our goal is to encourage every student to read at least 15 books during this school year that they have not previously read. Providing this list and some rewards is our way of challenging students to read exceptional books that will enrich their lives in some way.

By expanding the list from 15 to 60 books, we expect to increase the variety of books as well as the availability of the books so that more students can and will participate in reading the RMS Reads titles. In addition to the end of the year field trip, we will offer incentives periodically throughout the year for reading the RMS Reads books, beginning with a reward for completing the summer reading.
