ASUA Book Scholarship Extravaganza

Dear undergraduate and graduate student:

The Associated Students at the University of Arizona (ASUA) are excited to introduce the ASUA Book Scholarship Extravaganza.

In response to the increased demand for financial aid opportunities, the ASUA Book Scholarship Extravaganza is a program created to alleviate some of the financial burdens that students are experiencing in these tough economic times by providing multiple $500 scholarships for the 2010 spring semester.

For example, if you spend $300 in textbooks, we will reimburse you for the $300 and the additional $200 will be rolled over to the next semester for you to use on textbooks.

The scholarships are open to undergraduate and graduate students of all backgrounds. The process will consist of an application and an interview. All applicants will be notified whether or not they have made it to the interview round via email.

The ultimate goal of this scholarship program is to alleviate the stresses of buying textbooks, so that students do not have to spend time finding jobs or procuring loans to pay for their books. Hopefully, with the money you save, students can pay off other college expenses and ultimately free up time to contribute back to the UA community by getting involved.

Those interested can find the application either at the front desk of the ASUA office (located on the third floor of the SUMC) or at the ASUA Senate website Applications are due by Friday, February 19thby 5pm. The finished application can either be emailed to or dropped off at the ASUA office.

On behalf of the Associated Students at the University of Arizona, we thank you for your interest and look forward to reading your applications. Good luck!

Senator Stephen Wallace

Senator Leo Yamaguchi

Additional Documentation

What we are looking for in the applicants:

As stated in the one page summary, we hope that this scholarship will provide the applicant with a little financial relief so that they may give back to the community in some shape or form. Through the application and interview process, we hope to award the scholarship to individuals who have solid GPAs, but more importantly award individuals who seem proactive, altruistic, and passionate about their aspirations. We feel that a person who exhibits these qualities will most successfully be able to give back to their community.

Method of allocation:

Scholarships will be distributed based upon the quality of the applications and interviews. Applications will be “blind” meaning that the reviewers will not know whose application is whose eliminating any bias/favoritism. If one of the interviewers knows the interviewees then they will be asked to leave the interview to avoid bias. The same questions will be asked during the interview process to maintain consistency.

You cannot apply for the scholarship again if you have been recipient of a book scholarship already. Records will be kept and managed in order to avoid this problem. We want to impact as many students possible, which is why we will not accept past winners.

The funding of this scholarship covers only the cost of textbooks, up to the amount of $500. For example, if you spend$300 in textbooks, we will reimburse the student for the $300 and the additional $200 will be rolled over to the next semester for the students to use.

Outside Funding:

We are receiving $5,000 from the ASUA Scholarship account to begin this project. We are also going to seek outside funding from University Boulevard.

As mentioned in the one page summary, advertisement is going to be a crucial element to the success of this program. We will be utilizing multiple forms of communication in order to inform students that this program is available to them: Facebook groups, table toppers, flyers, 3D memos, Daily Wildcat ad space, and posters.

Table toppers

Fast Copy will distribute the Table Toppers, setting them out on tables in the Student Union Memorial Center and in the Park Student Union on Mondays by 10:00 a.m. There are approximately 460 tables throughout the two buildings, and a Table Topper will be placed on each. Leftover toppers (approx 40) will be used to replenish empty tables throughout the week. Toppers will be removed Sunday night by Student Union Event Services staff.

We plan on using the “table tubes” (pictured above) option which is a part of the premium package. One week will cost $275.

What is a 3D Memo?

A 3D memo is a service provided to the University of Arizona campus by the Printing Services division of Procurement and Contracting Services. It is a cost effective way to inform university faculty/staff via email about university policies, issues, position announcements, or upcoming events. The cost of one 3D memo is $19.00. This price covers the electronic email distribution and posting to the web site archives.

We plan on utilizing two 3D memos that will be distributed twice throughout the semester. The emails will essentially explain what the ASUA Book Scholarship Extravaganza is and explain how, when, and where to apply.

For more information about 3D memos please visit

Flyers

500 4”x6” flyers will cost $147.50 ($0.39 a piece) at Office Max. We plan on creating rather simple black and white flyers in order to reduce costs and increase the quantity that we can distribute.
