Astronomy Unit Project

Instructions: Choose one project from each side of this sheet. Follow all guidelines. Begin your project early and ask for feedback from your teacher to make sure you are on the right track.

Create a Comic Strip
Create a comic strip where the Sun explains how important it is to the Earth.
OR
Create a comic strip where you are taking a trip through the Solar System, describing at least one fact about each planet. / Comic Strip Guidelines
  • On at least one sheet of small construction paper
  • At least 8 cells
  • Must have meaningful dialogue
  • Must have clear letters and color
  • Must have accurate information from your notes or quality resource
  • Cite the source of your information

Write a News Report
Write and present a news report describing the effects of the atmosphere thinning and disappearing.
OR
Write and present a news report about the Sun beginning to cool and become weak. / News Report Guidelines
  • Include at least three facts about the importance of the atmosphere or Sun to Earth.
  • Clear descriptions about what would happen to Earth if the atmosphere or Sun disappeared.
  • Speak loudly, speak clearly, speak slowly
  • Turn in your script after your perform the news report
  • Cite the source of your information

Create a Venn Diagram
Create a Venn diagram comparing and contrasting Earth with another planet.
OR
Create a Venn diagram comparing and contrasting the Sun with another star. / Venn Diagram Guidelines
  • At least on one small sheet of construction paper
  • Must have a title for the entire diagram and each section
  • Must have at least five facts in each section
  • Each section should be decorated like the real object (like we did in class).
  • Must have accurate information with cited source

Create a Model of the Sun
Using a medium of your choice, create a three-dimensional model of the Sun and label its parts.
AND
Write a two-paragraph paper of at least four sentences each. The paper should describe the importance of the Sun and a description of your model with at least one fact about each labeled part. / Sun Model Guidelines
  • Must have at least four labeled parts
  • Make your model colorful and attractive
  • Use proper grammar, spelling, and punctuation
  • Must have accurate information from your notes or quality resource
  • Cite the source of your information
  • Present your model to class – speak loudly, clearly, and slowly

Create a Brochure
Create a brochure about another planet. It can be informational or persuasive as though you are trying to get people to visit.
AND
Create a 30-second commercial to present the information in your brochure to the class. / Brochure Guidelines
  • On at least one sheet of copy paper
  • At least eight characteristics of the planet, including the distance from the Sun and length of the day and year, and high and low temperatures in Fahrenheit and Celsius
  • Make your brochure attractive and colorful
  • Must have accurate information with a cited source
  • Speak loudly, clearly, and slowly

Create a Solar System Model
Create a model of the Solar System, including the Sun and the eight planets.
AND
Include at least two characteristics of the Sun and each planet. These can be attached to the model, written in paragraph form, or in a chart or table. / Solar System Model Guidelines
  • Each part of the model must be clearly labeled
  • Make the model colorful and attractive
  • Must have accurate information with a cited source (2 facts per part)
  • Present your model to class – speak loudly, clearly, and slowly

Create a PowerPoint Presentation
Create a presentation about one of the following topics:
  • The Sun
  • Earth and its atmosphere
  • The other planets
  • Your choice (with teacher’s approval)

  • At least 8 informational slides and one title slide with your name
  • Slides must have color and at least one graphic per page
  • Animations are optional but should not distract from the information
  • Present to the class – speak loudly, clearly, and slowly. Do not read straight from the slideshow.
