Association for Canadian Studies in Australia and New Zealand (ACSANZ)

ACSANZ Postgraduate Travel Award

Guidelines:

The Association for Canadian Studies in Australia and New Zealand (ACSANZ) offers up to four grants each year for postgraduate students wishing to undertake a short research trip to Canada. An amount up to AUD $3,000 is available for each grant for travel to and within Canada.

Eligibility:

  1. Applicants must be enrolled in a masters or doctoral degree at an Australian or New Zealand university;
  2. Applicants must be members of ACSANZ;
  3. The proposed research must be in Canadian Studies. Canadian Studies encompasses all areas of academic enquiry that have a distinctly Canadian orientation, for example, Canadian topics in the humanities, the social and political sciences, and some branches of the health and environmental sciences. Comparative topics with a substantial Canadian component are also eligible.
  4. The proposed research must be relevant to the applicant’s thesis/dissertation topic.
  5. Awards are made for short research trips to Canada only (e.g. four weeks). Research trips longer than six months will not be supported.
  6. Awards are not made to enable students to pursue courses of study at a Canadian university nor for the sole purpose of attending a conference or seminar or to present a paper.

Applications:

Applications should contain:

  1. A completed application form (see attached);
  2. A description of the proposed research in Canada, including:
  3. an outline of the relationship of the proposed research to the applicant’s thesis topic;
  4. a clear statement of why/how the proposed research in Canada is essential to or will enhance the quality of the thesis or dissertation;
  5. a research plan, including a demonstration of the feasibility of the project (e.g. logistics of how the research will be arranged);
  6. an itinerary and budget;
  7. Details (and documentation) of the student’s academic record and current enrolment status;
  8. A letter of support from the student's thesis/dissertation supervisor (sent DIRECT to the address below)

Applications and references must be received by the deadline of September 30.

Selection:

Awards are based on the merit of both the proposal and the applicant. Within that framework ACSANZ will give preference, other things being equal, to applications from full-time doctoral students. However, part-time and/or Master's students should not be discouraged from applying. Results are usually announced by December 1st.
