This week, you may choose from four different assignment options. Each option requires you to read the following section. The assignment options are listed after the scenario. Select Option 1, Option 2, Option 3, or Option 4 to complete for your assignment.

Sustainability Plan Guidelines

Your sustainability plan must present what, when, and how something is sustained and maintained now and into the indefinite future. Your plan may be submitted in a narrative or table format. The Corporation for National and Community Service (n.d.) provides the following list of components that make up a sustainability plan that must be included in your paper or table:

1.  Action items: Provide the items that must be addressed or occur. Refer to the following example: My plan for sustaining clean air in my community is to develop an education program about air-pollution-generating activities and their effects, schedule a presentation day and time, invite community participants, and research the effects of air pollution.

2.  Order of action items: Discuss how the action items will align or occur. One event or activity must occur before another; thus, order the items into steps similar to the following: 1) Research the effects of air pollution. 2) Develop an education program. 3) Schedule a presentation day and time. 4) Invite the community.

3.  Action steps: Explain how you will conduct the action items. How are you going to make each item happen? Include individuals or groups who will help you conduct these items. Use the following as a guide: To schedule a presentation day and time, I will attend next month’s community homeowner’s association (HOA) meeting and request permission from the board to add it to the following month’s agenda.

4.  Timeline: Estimate when you will conduct the action items, such as: In months 1-3, I will complete the research. If an item or activity does not have a specific conclusion time, indicate that it is ongoing.

The following is a sample of how you might incorporate your sustainability plan into a table format—keep in mind this is an incomplete plan:

Action Items / Action Steps / Timeline
Research and identify the effects of air pollution. / Review environmental websites and journals.
Document the sources of air pollution and environmental and health effects of air pollution.
Document video interviews of environmental researchers and facilitators. / Months 1-3
Develop an education program about air pollution effects. / Develop a presentation about why this program is needed and include air pollution’s ill effects, the required lifestyle changes, and the benefits and challenges of change. / Months 1-3
Schedule a presentation day and time. / Attend a monthly HOA meeting to present the program benefits.
Request that the HOA board add the presentation to the following month’s agenda.
Document the audio and visual equipment needed for presentation and layout of the room. / Month 4
Identify and invite community participants. / Tally the number of homes in the community.
Create and distribute flyers to homes announcing the next HOA meeting and the educational program that will be introduced. / Months 4-5

Option 1: Water Resource Plan Declining Fish Stock Paper

As a retired fisherman, you appreciate the balance between man and nature. You recently viewed a newscast about declining fish stock in our oceans and have identified a plan that fishermen and environmentalists could agree to. You have decided to write a letter to the news station outlining your plan.

·  Resource: Ch. 11 of Visualizing Environmental Science

·  View the Declining Fish Stock Video Learning Resource (VLR) located in the Week Six Materials of your student web page.

·  Write a 700- to 1,050-word paper that includes the following:

o  A brief description of the water resource problem in the VLR and how it originated

o  A management and sustainment plan you think will benefit both sides

o  How your plan will be viewed by the environmentalists and fishermen

o  Other problems, besides declining fish stock, that result from techniques for catching fish

o  How your plan affects the community

o  Issues relating to jobs, resources, and lifestyles

·  Include a minimum of two outside references.

·  Format your paper consistent with APA guidelines.

·  Post your paper as an attachment.

Option 2: Water Resource Plan Freshwater Resources Paper

Your local newspaper recently ran an article about issues facing freshwater resources. In response, you have identified a plan you think will alleviate one of the problems. You have decided to write a letter to the editor outlining your plan.

·  Resource: Ch. 10 of Visualizing Environmental Science

·  Select a freshwater resource issue from the following list:

o  Flooding

o  Aquifer depletion

o  Overdrawing surface water

o  Saltwater intrusion and salinization

o  Water pollution

o  Eutrophication

·  Write a 700- to 1,050-word paper that includes the following:

o  A brief description of your issue and how it originated

o  A management and sustainment plan you think will alleviate the problem

o  Any opposing views of the issue

o  Other water or land resource problems that might result, such as nonpoint source pollution contributing to eutrophication in freshwater resources, or the destruction of coastal estuaries affecting marine life and ocean resources

o  Any challenges, limitations, or implications of your plan

o  How your plan affects the community

o  Issues relating to jobs, resources, and lifestyles

·  Include a minimum of two outside references.

·  Format your paper consistent with APA guidelines.

·  Post your paper as an attachment.

Option 3: Water Resource Plan Graphic Novel

You have been hired by the Game and Fish Department to inform the public about the new plan to manage water resources in a new and interesting way. They want you to create a graphic novel to depict how the plan will benefit the community to distribute at the local elementary school.

·  View the Declining Fish Stock VLR located in the Week Six Materials of your student web page.

·  Create a graphic novel, casting yourself as the hero trying to get the environmentalists and fishermen to support your sustainable plan to manage water resources. The novel must contain dialogue and be 3 to 5 pages in length, and address the following:

o  Introduce your sustainment plan.

o  Identify why environmentalists and fishermen might not agree with your plan.

o  Explain how you will get them to support your plan.

·  Scan each page of the graphic novel to your computer as a .jpg file and post it as an attachment.

Option 4: Water Resource Plan Public Service Announcement

As an environmentalist and aspiring documentarian, you have been hired by the local conservation agency to broadcast a public service announcement (PSA) about your plan to conserve ocean water resources. They want you to highlight the issue and outline the plan you created to manage the resource.

·  Review Ch. 11 and Figure 11.12 of Visualizing Environmental Science, and choose one of the ocean water resource issues.

·  Create a 3- to 5-minute PSA radio broadcast, using Audio Ace, explaining the issue and highlight your management plan for the resource. Include the following:

o  A brief description of the issue

o  The management and sustainment plan that will alleviate the problem

o  Any challenges, limitations, or implications of the plan

o  How the plan will affect the community

·  Be creative with this dialogue and have fun. Remember, however, that your assignment is graded on how well it addresses the items listed above. Enlist family or friends for the different roles or change your voice for each role. You may wish to write out the script and practice it several times before making the final recording. Remember to focus on excellent pronunciation, especially of vowels.

·  Submit the audio link provided to you by Audio Ace to your instructor.
