Job Description –Technical Specialist (TS)

Reports to: Information and Guidance Team Leader

Staff Responsibilities: None

Salary range: £34593 - £42925 (dependent upon experience)

Overall Purpose of the role:

The Pensions Advisory Service runs a national Pensions Helpline, open Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm, through which the public can seek information or guidance on any matter relating to an occupational or personal pension plan, or the state pension. We also offer an email and letter service. You would be joining our team of pensionspecialists to be available from 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday, to answer the helpline and to ensure that all written enquires are answered in a timely manner.

Key responsibilities:

As a pension specialist within the Information & Guidance team, you will be expected to provide high quality technical information and guidance on private stakeholder and state pensions to members of the public and, where required, support our network of volunteer advisers.

The following are the main duties:

  • Provide accurate information and guidance to members of the public, via the Helpline, post and email.
  • Assess written queries to ensure that enquiries and complaints are dealt with separately, appropriately and promptly.
  • Provide good quality and accurate assistance to our team of voluntary London Office Advisers as required.
  • Contribute towards shared technical know-how in the office.

In addition, you may on occasion be required to handle complaint cases to a conclusion, draft technical material for publication, carry out ad hoc projects to improve the service we provide and attend meetings or workshops. As a pensionspecialist you will also be allocated a number of tasks that will be your individual responsibility.

Person Specification

Experience, Knowledge and Qualifications:

  • A sound knowledge of pensions law and practice.
  • Knowledge of a broad spectrum of pension arrangements, occupational, personal and state.
  • Must be good at dealing with members of the public, translating complex ideas and topics into clear English.
  • Good organisational skills.
  • A commitment to on-going personal and professional development.
  • APMI or equivalent desirable but not essential.

Skills and Personal Qualities:

  • Must be good at dealing with members of the public.
  • Excellent English written and spoken communication skills.
  • Be able to translate complex ideas and topics into clear English.
  • Have an excellent telephone manner.
  • A sound knowledge of pensions law and practice.
