1.Divide into small groups. After reviewing the techniques of health assessment for children, choose two members of your group to role-play a nurse performing an assessment of a 12-year-old who is admitted to the hospital for removal of a brain tumor. The rest of the group should provide critique and offer suggestions as needed. Share your role-play with the rest of the class. / 1
2.Divide into five groups. Each group should choose one of the following five 2020 National Health Goals related to health assessment of children to discuss:
  • Increase the proportionof children with a diagnosed condition identified through newborn screening who have an annual assessment of services needed and received.
  • Increase the proportion of children and youth, 17 years of age and younger, who have a specific source of ongoing carefrom a baseline of 94.3% to a target of 100%.
  • Increase the proportion of adolescents aged 12 to 19 years who have had a hearing examination in the past 5 years from a baseline of 79.3% to 87.2%.
  • Increase the proportion of preschool childrenaged 5 years and under who receive vision screening from a baseline of 40.1% to a target of 44.1%.
  • Achieve and maintain effective vaccination coverage levels for universally recommended vaccines among young children from baselines of 85% (DTaP), 94% (hepatitis B), 57% (Haemophilus influenzae type b), 94% (poliomyelitis), 91% (varicella), and 92% (MMR) to a target level of 90%.
