Assignment brief

Qualification / BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma in Applied Science (Applied Biology)
Unit number and title / Unit 13: Biochemistry and biochemical techniques
Start date / 04/01/2016
Deadline / 12/02/2016
Assessor name / Mrs Turner-Smith
Assignment title / Aerobic and anaerobic respiration
The purpose of this assignment is to know the difference between anaerobic and aerobic respiration.
Scenario
You are working as a laboratory technician working within a research laboratory in a university. You have been asked to find out about aerobic and anaerobic respiration and report your findings to your team.
Task 1 / P6 Identify the main differences between anaerobic and aerobic glucose degradation
Aerobic and anaerobic exercise can affect the body in different ways. This is because the metabolic pathways for the two types of respiration are different. Using the text and other sources of information, produce a list of differences between the two types of glucose respiration.
Date Due: This provides evidence for P6
Task 2a and 2b / M4 Compare the sites of ATP production and consumption during aerobic and anaerobic respiration
Task 2a - Produce a labelled diagram showing aerobic and anaerobic respiration. This requires a detailed diagram in order to describe and compare the relevant sites. Ensure that you clearly explain the 4 stages of aerobic respiration and where each of the stages take place within the cell.
Task 2b – Produce a table comparing the amounts of ATP molecules used and produced by the aerobic stages and the anaerobic stages
Date Due: This provides evidence for M4
Task 3 / D4: Evaluate the regulation of glycolysis in terms of energy requirements in cells
Write a report to describe how glycolysis is regulated, and how changing concentrations of ATP may affect this regulation. Evaluate how the inhibition of reactions may affect the amount of energy within the cell. Include a description of how lactate fermentation during anaerobic glycolysis affects muscle cells.
You will need to describe how the energy is derived from glucose may be stored if the cell doesn’t require ATP.
Date Due: This provides evidence for D4
