Assignment #5: Computer Solid Modeling

Team Assignment

1. Build a Computer Solid Model of Each Individual Part.

After you have completed the dissection of your object and sketched the major individual parts, use the sketches to develop solid computer models of the parts. [Recall you were asked to make Xerox copies of your original sketches and to use those Xerox copies to write dimensions and notes during the dissection process for this next task]. Use the software you have learned in the computer graphics lab to aid in your computer modeling. Be sure to save your computer model files on a diskette or in your user computer account. You will need these files later.

2. Make a Shaded Color Hardcopy of Each Part.

Once you have completed the computer models, obtain a shaded color hardcopy on a “Title Sheet.” Use the color printer in the CAD lab. Also make a color assembly model of your entire system and submit it along with the individual parts.

3. Make a Mass Properties Analysis Report of Each Part.

Run a mass properties analysis of each part and get a formatted printout of the report file. Use a “Word Processing” type of software to get the printout. On the Mass Properties Report, identify the type of “material” used for the analysis of each part. To get accurate results, you will need to know the density of each part. Refer to the Table below and to your computer lab notes.

Material / Unit Weight (lbs/in3) / Density (lbs-sec2/in4)

Aluminum

/ 0.097 / 0.251x10-3
Chromium / 0.259 / 0.671x10-3
Copper / 0.323 / 0.837x10-3

Magnesium

/ 0.063 / 0.163x10-3
Plastic / 0.036 / 0.093x10-3
Steel / 0.281 / 0.728x10-3
Titanium / 0.163 / 0.422x10-3

4. Make an .STL File of Each Part.

Make an .STL file of each part that you plan to prototype, and save the files on a diskette. Make sure that you follow the correct instructions for the .STL file command. Save these files for later use in the rapid 3-D printing lab.

Submission

Submit items 2 and 3 above as a TEAM. Be sure to include a cover sheet. The DUE DATE for this assignment is Monday, November 12, 2007in class (one set per team).
