Scenario

Fremantle Consulting Services is a company that provides IT services to local businesses. It employs 75 people. At its main site (HQ) it has a small server room with five servers which provide authentication and directory services, resource sharing, printing and hosts two large database systems. The company wishes to upgrade the network to support a new IP telephony and video training system for users.

At a recent review of IT security it was identified that some users have the opportunity to access information that is not appropriate to their job role. The company would like to implement security zones for the service desk users, technical support staff and the administration staff. The business is also concerned that the performance of servers has noticeably declined as more users have been added to the network. The service desk which has 45 staff is located on the third floor of the office while technical and administration staff are located on the second floor.

The business has decided to implement three data VLANs, 1 server VLAN and 1 voice VLAN across the network. The business is expecting a twenty-five per cent growth over the next two years. High availability is a priority technical goal for the business. All switches currently in used will be upgraded to gain the benefits of newer technologies and PoE support for the voice VLAN.

1.1 Gather relevant data to identify and document network architecture.
1.2 Select an appropriate hierarchical model for the network.
1.3 Determine switch network topology to be installed, with reference to network architecture and network protocol types.

List the business requirements for the network upgrade and create a topology diagram of the corporate network using appropriate hierarchal model for a campus network.

As per best practice, ensure distribution layer redundancy and redundant links to access layer switches.

1. Identify required switch specifications
1.1 Identify switch fabric and the type and number of switches.

Consider the number of access switchports required for users and the number of phones, servers and trunks, and along with the topology diagram determine the number and type of switches required.

Consider the capacity of trunk links to provide enough ports for Etherchannel multilinking of trunk ports.

Assume servers will be using teamed 4 GB network connections and all user hosts will have 100Mbps network connections.

Draw a table that shows the type of switch, the switch fabric and the number of switches required.

1.6 Select relevant hardware and software with reference to equipment specifications/limitations.

Research enterprise switches and IOS from two different vendors.

The enterprise switches must support distribution and access layer features and capabilities including:

·  sufficient switchports to meet needs

·  asymmetric switching for trunk links

·  PoE support for access ports

·  support for VLANs, vtp, rapid STP

·  distribution switches should support layer 3 routing

·  switchport security for access ports

·  switch management protocols

·  4 Gbps switch forwarding bandwidth.

Write a report that describes the features of the two products that you have selected. Make sure that each of the basic requirements listed above have been met. Identify additional features of interest that each product has.

Write a recommendation that supports the purchase of a model of access layer and distribution layer switch. Justify your decision.

1.7 Evaluate switch purchasing options and determine most appropriate.

Investigate the switch purchasing options available with two vendor partners and send an email to your trainer describing the options. Recommend and justify a preferred option.

2.1 Install switches according to vendor guidelines, network architecture and client requirements.

Consult vendor documentation for the switches provided and install the switches into a rack or as instructed.

2.2 Configure switches to a basic level.

Configure switches with an appropriate hostname and an IP address, and a default gateway for management access. Implement basic password protection on console and vty lines and on the enable command. Configure a banner with a security message.

2.3 Configure switches for VLAN operation.

Configure four data VLANs as follows:

VLAN 10 ServerLAN

VLAN 20 SupportLAN

Configure a Voice VLAN on VLAN 150.

Configure the native VLAN for trunking on VLAN 100.

Configure switchports on the switches to the appropriate VLAN.

2.4 Configure a VLAN trunking protocol (VTP) for the switches.

Configure trunking on the switches. Trunks should be configured to send switch-generated traffic on native VLAN 100. All trunks should support only the data VLANs and the voice VLAN.

Configure VTP to propagate VLANs to all switches in the LAN. One switch should be configured as the VTP server and other switches should be configured as VTP clients.

2.5 Configure a router to run inter-VLAN routing for the selected VLANs.

Configure either ‘router-on-a-stick’ inter-VLAN routing or a traditional model inter-VLAN routing to provide full connectivity between VLANs.

2.6 Document switch configuration according to client requirements.

Create configuration and operational status documentation for all switches and the router.

Use CLI commands to document the configuration file and the operational status of the VLANs, vtp, spanning tree summaries, switchport trunk interfaces and the routing table.

Copy the switch and router configurations to the TFTP server and save a screenshot of the successful transfer. Create a version control register for configuration files and document the transferred files.

Test the switches.

3.1 Assess the impact of the changes on the network.
3.2 Prepare, schedule and execute tests.

Design the testing documentation to ensure full connectivity to all hosts.

Create an email to schedule a time to conduct testing.

Execute tests and document the results.

3.1 Troubleshoot the network to track, resolve, document and report errors.

Resolve any errors discovered by network testing and retest.

3.4 Make changes and resolve problems to ensure that the network is functioning properly.

While testing, it is noticed that when accessing VLAN switchports it takes 50 seconds to come online and could cause errors for hosts requiring DHCP addresses at boot up.

To resolve this issue you are to do the following:

1.  Configure rapid PVSTP on all switches to manage redundant links. Optimise the STP topology by making each switch the root for a different VLAN.

2.  Implement portfast and BPDUguard on all the switchports running in access mode.

3.5 Back-up final switch configuration, to reflect changes.

Save all configurations to NVram/flash.

Copy the switch and router configurations to the TFTP server and save a screenshot of the successful transfer.
