Charles EugsterAged 95 – broke world indoor record for 200 metres. The retired dentist, who took up exercise in his 80s, clocked in at 55.48 seconds. He plays all kinds of sports but took up competitive track in 2013. He eats fresh fruit in the morning and gulps a protein drink after workouts. On his website, Eugster offered these general tips for winning at life: "Successful aging requires work, diet and exercise. The huge mental and physical potential of the aged remains unexplored. Bodies can now be rebuilt at any age and a new life started."

Elite runner Hyvon Ngetich from Kenyais clearly in extreme pain as she struggles to reach the finish line of the Austin Marathon in Texas earlier this week.Her legs gave out just 50 metres away from the finish line – she had been in first place at the time.When the video starts, she’s on her hands and knees, barely moving, and with a wheelchair behind her in case she needs it. At one stage she stops and hugs the ground. It’s not clear if she’ll be able to continue.

But then she gets up, she looks ahead, and she keeps going. In the end, she came third – but race organisers gave her the same prize money as the person who came second in recognition of her huge effort.

Britain's Derek Redmond in the semi-final of the 400m at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics when, following a hamstring injury, his father helped him over the line. The injury occurred 250 metres in, forcing Redmond to collapse to the track. Determined to finish the race, he got up and hobbled round before his father came out of the stands to help him complete the race.

Another contestant said - "Long after the names of the medallists have faded from our minds, you will be remembered for having finished, for having tried so hard, for having a father to demonstrate the strength of his love for his son. I thank you, and I will always remember your race and I will always remember you – the purest, most courageous example of grit and determination I have seen."
