All members are welcome to the upcoming seminar for continuing education and professional development. There is a provision to earn credits for those who will need professional development hours for their Professional Engineer license renewal. The nominal rates have been determined to defray the costs of hosting the seminar. Please feel free to invite others such as SAE members who might also take advantage of the PDHs that can be earned at a very minimal expense. We have excellent speakers lined up to address interesting topics.

First Presentation Title:

Medical Device Packaging Development

Description:

Packaging systems for terminally sterilized medical devices are critical for safety and efficacy of the products. The development process and the lifecycle management of terminally sterilized medical devices are tightly regulated. In this presentation, a design control method required by the regulations will be explained and an example of packaging system development process will be presented.

Bio: The presenter, Mr. Sung Kwon received BS and MS in biomedical engineering from the University of Minnesota – Twin Cities and Marquette University, respectively. He worked as a Global Operational Engineer at Baxter Healthcare from 2011 to 2015. In this role, Sung Kwon led packaging development projects and supported product sustaining activities for various types of medical devices. Since December 2015, Sung has been working as a project engineer at Vesta Inc., located in Franklin, WI.

Second Presentation Title:

Design, Development and production of M-ATV

Description:

During the war in Afghanistan, the US Military needed a vehicle that had the armor protection of a heavy MRAP while being light and mobile enough to negotiate the rugged terrain. In December of 2008 the U.S. government issued a Request for Proposal (RFP) for a new vehicle that could meet these requirements. During the next 3 months, Oshkosh Corporation designed and built prototype M-ATVs to compete against 8 other companies for the contract. Five of these vehicles were delivered to Aberdeen Proving Ground in Feb. 2009 for evaluation. On June 30, 2009, Oshkosh Corporation was awarded the production M-ATV contract. The contract required 45 vehicles produced the following month and production be increased to 1000 vehicles per month by December 2009. Oshkosh Corporation was able to exceed the contract requirements and a total of 8,722 M-ATVs were delivered to the US Military. The M-ATV remains a part of the US Army enduring fleet with reset and enhancement activities currently underway.

Bio: The presenter, Mr. Aaron Lynn is the Principal Engineer at Oshkosh Corporation. He received a BSME ’99 and MSME ’11 from UW – Madison and is also a P.E. registered in WI. He has spent 17 years working in the Oshkosh Corporation Test and Development department. He has worked primarily on Military vehicles but has also worked on Commercial vehicles such as snow blowers, concrete mixers, and Airport Rescue Firefighting (ARFF) vehicles along with several component development projects. Aaron was very involved with the M-ATV program as the Test Lead during the design and development phase of the program.


Third Presentation Title:

Pattern and Core Box Design and Conception

Description:

This presentation will give an overview of the steps going into designing and fabricating patterns and core boxes for a green sand and no bake foundry. The design phase will center around the use of a simulation software to create the pattern layout and gating by evaluating filling and solidification of the CAD generated mold. The conception phase will go through the steps starting from the CAD model to the finish tools.

Bio: Mr. Olivier Mereau received a BS from Trine University and a MS from The Missouri University of Science and Technology. He worked at Didion and Sons Foundry from 2004 to 2006 as a Metallurgist and Casting Engineer. In 2006, He went to Grede in Reedsburg, WI to work as a Foundry Engineer. Since 2014, He is the Foundry Casting Engineer and Pattern Shop Supervisor at Milwaukee Valve in Prairie du Sac, WI.

Fourth Presentation Title:

Technical Library Research

Description:

This presentation will give an overview of using various resources for technical library research. Techniques for locating journal articles, technical papers and reports, patents, and other relevant literature will be discussed.

Bio:

Ms. Denise Gergetz earned a Master of Library and Information Science in 2010 from the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee. She also holds BA degrees in history and the comparative study of religion. She currently works as a librarian and archivist at the Milwaukee School of Engineering, where she assists students, staff, and faculty with their research information needs.
