LAST DAY of Term 1
Principal’s Desk
The end of last week signified the Term 2 halfway mark… difficult to believe, isn’t it? Thus far we have enjoyed a variety of activities and participated in many events, including: cross country- interschool and district; NAPLAN, Days of Excellence; Under 8’s Day; Mother’s Day Pamper afternoon, St Helena excursion; just to mention a few! Despite these additions to our school week- along with a public holiday- and the students have remained settled and focused on their learning programs.
At Ashwell State School we are incredibly fortunate to have wonderful school community of parents, grandparents and other extended family members who regularly volunteer their services within our school. These people contribute to the everyday teaching and learning programs at our school in a variety of ways, some of these include:
- Providing assistance during learning activity rotations
- Art and craft rotations
- Sharing their expertise- grounds and facilities
- Donating materials- construction, paper, books, etc.
- P&C activities, e.g. cross country, etc.
- Individual reading with students
While this list is not exhaustive it certainly demonstrates what a sense of community we have at Ashwell SS. While the teaching staff at Ashwell has the primary responsibility for the education of the students, it is the community involvement which enriches the students’ lives and their learning journey. As the saying goes, ‘it is the village which brings up a child’. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the entire school community for helping to ensure that Ashwell SS is a great school!
Teaching and Learning News
At Ashwell SS student achievement data is consistently monitored throughout the implementation of the teaching and learning program. As teachers we make observations and collect work samples throughout the term.
In addition to this formative student achievement information, each class also completes pieces of assessment as a summary of the students’ knowledge, understanding and application of their learning. This ongoing and summative collection of students’ data provides a complete ‘picture’ of a student’s progress in each area of the curriculum.
At the end of this term each student will receive their Semester One Report- which is an amalgamation of the formative and summative assessment throughout the entire semester. These reports will come home on Monday the 22nd of June.
ST HELENA ISLAND
Yesterday all of our Year 3-6 students participated in the excursion to St Helena Island, as part of the history unit they have been learning throughout Term’s One and Two. An early, foggy and a little bit of a chilly start, was the beginning of what was a wonderful day. The picture perfect weather was the perfect backdrop to our catamaran trip across Moreton Bay, to the historic convict settlement of St Helena Island.
Whilst there, the children, staff and helpful parents (Anne Muspratt and Jason Powell) enjoyed dramatic
presentations from a ‘guard’ and prisoners ‘31’ and ‘321’. We learned about the development of the convict island, which later became the high security prison for
the region- due to its island location. Students visited the cemeteries, prison yards, lime kiln, the Commissioner’s Cottage, and particularly enjoyed the ‘punishment re-enactment’ with the cat-‘o-nine tails!
While the children and the adults, learned much about our region’s history, they also enjoyed the adventure of the day- everyone was extremely tired when we arrived back at Ashwell SS.
Once again, the conduct of all of the Ashwell students was exemplary, always following instructions, staying safe and speaking politely and with respect. Well done, girls and boys.
A BIG thank you to Mrs Denton for coordinating the excursion, and our APPRECIATION to Mrs Muspratt and Mr Powell for joining us on the day.
Check out our Facebook page for some wonderful photos.
READERS’ CUP
Each year the schools across each region and district are invited to participate in a competition known as Readers’ Cup. This competition is focused on five books- identified by the teacher librarian association. There are a number of selection criteria used when identifying students to participate, including: identified books; genres covered; reading standards; knowledge of what each child enjoys reading; reading observations; and a willingness to work as part of a team.
The Readers’ Cup team members have the task of reading, reviewing and reporting on five chapter books. This doesn’t seem difficult- however, there is short time frame. Our team is: Josh, Jack, Gauge, Will and Ryan. The boys started reading the books last Friday- and some are already finished reading two and three of the titles, which is a huge accomplishment.
Each week, the boys will meet with Mrs Eiby and Mrs Riddell, during their lunch break, to:
- Complete book reports
- Identify challenging text
- Create possible quiz questions
- Discuss the books they have read
This work will prepare the team to compete at Lowood SHS, on Friday the 19th June, in the Readers’ Cup Quiz. Good luck boys… and keep reading!!!
UNDER EIGHT’S DAY
While the big people were away… the little people did play!! Our Prep, Year 1 and 2 students enjoyed a variety of fun- filled activities… focused on playing while learning. Thank you to Mrs deMey and Mrs Maguire for coordinating such an exciting morning. The photos on our Facebook page are wonderful!
PREMIER’S READING CHALLENGE
The Premier’s reading Challenge is for everyone! While there are a number of identified titles for students to read- the primary aim of the program is to get students reading… and enjoying reading.
For many of our students that means selecting their own books to read. All students have the opportunity to borrow each week from the library. As the students are all borrowing regularly- sometimes that means that the title an individual is seeking is already on loan, and they may need to wait. Students are welcome to read books from school, books from home, books from public libraries… whatever gets them reading.
This year our goal is to have every student participate in this challenge and complete the goal. Imagine if every student was able to receive a certificate from the Premier- recognizing their wonderful work andor achievement! We have from the 19th May (when we started), to the 28th of August.
If anyone has misplaced their recording sheet, or already needs a second sheet, please see your teacher, or Mrs Riddell.
