Ashrae Technology Awards

ASHRAE TECHNOLOGY AWARDS
Entry deadline April 29, 2006

What are the ASHRAE Technology Awards?

The ASHRAE Technology Awards recognize members for innovative designs and technological concepts that are proven through actual operating data. Awards are made in seven categories: Commercial Buildings (New and Existing); Institutional Buildings (New and Existing); Health Care Facilities (New and Existing); Industrial Facilities (New and Existing); Public Assembly (New and Existing); Residential (New and Existing); and Alternative or Renewable Energy Use.

Are the Technology Awards only for energy projects?

No. The judging criteria include indoor air quality, innovation, operation and maintenance, cost effectiveness, and environmental impact as well as energy efficiency. Each of these must be addressed in the entry, but a project might excel in only one or two areas. For instance, a project might solve indoor air quality problems for a facility with inadequate ventilation air. Energy use would likely increase for the facility, but the chosen solution minimized the increase. Or perhaps a project has no effect on energy use but greatly reduces cost of maintenance.

I have a project in mind, but it is three years old. Is it eligible?

Absolutely! The only time requirement is that the project have been in operation for at least one year.

My project has been in operation for at least a year, but there is no utility data specific to my project’s performance. How do I show the results of the project?

Not every project will show an impact in utility records. In those instances, engineering calculations or the results of a nationally recognized computer modeling program are acceptable.

Will submitting take much time?

Not at the chapter and regional competition levels. There is a 1-page information sheet to be completed along with a brief narrative addressing each of the five criteria mentioned above. This narrative should not be more than 2 pages. The submission should also include a system schematic or diagram on a sheet no larger than 11 x 17.

So what’s in it for me?

Aside from the recognition of your peers and self-satisfaction of a job well-done, the Birmingham Chapter is giving awards to our chapter and regional winners. Local first-place winners will receive a $75 gift certificate to one of our better local restaurants. Any regional winners from the Birmingham Chapter will receive an award up to $300 for 1st Place!

What is the deadline for chapter competition?

April 29, 2006.
