JOB DESCRIPTION

Job Title: Care Assistant

Responsible To: Home Manager/Deputy Manager/Nursing

Staff/Senior Carer

Main Duties and Responsibilities

1.  Assist residents in rising from and retiring to bed. Maintain records.

2.  Assist residents who need help with dressing/undressing, washing and toileting.

3.  Regularly attend to resident’s hygiene needs ensuring a high standard of care is always achieved.

4.  Help with the service of meals and assist residents to feed as instructed.

5.  Prepare drinks and light refreshments and ensure cool drinks are available in the day rooms at all times.

6.  Observe, assist and record on dietary and fluid intake of residents. Report any concerns to nurse in charge.

7.  Help residents who may have problems with mobility and ensure correct aids are used.

8.  Help residents with incontinence and ensure the correct aids are used.

9.  Ensure all commodes, urinals and toilets are appropriately cleaned and disinfected following use. Follow decontamination guidelines.

10. Adhere to infection control guidelines at all times.

11. Ensure that beds are clean kept clean and comfortable at all times through regular changing of linen.

12. Immediately report any accidents to Nurse in Charge.

13. Help in the care of residents’ personal aids such as spectacles, hearing aids, dentures, walking aids and wheelchairs. Report any loss or damage immediately.

14. Assist Nursing Staff to carry out duties when requested.

15. Observe and report changes in residents’ behaviour/condition.

16. Attend to the needs of sick residents as directed by Nursing Staff. Ensure all charts are recorded as necessary.

17. Engage fully when required to do so in the reception, transfer and discharge of residents.

18. Accompany residents to hospital.

19. Co-operate fully with Health Professionals visiting the Home thereby ensuring high standards of care.

20. Maintain effective communications with relatives regarding residents’ needs.

21. Respond promptly to the Nurse Call System when activated.

22. Keep tidy all areas of the Home including residents’ wardrobes and lockers.

23. Ensure the safe keeping of residents’ belongings and valuables.

24. Be available to talk and listen to residents at all times.

25. When time permits participate in activities organised for residents such as reading, music, bingo, games and parties.

26. Accompany residents on outings.

27. Answer telephone as per policy and take messages when required to do so.

28. Exercise economic use of resources.

29. Ensure confidentiality is maintained at all times.

30. Adhere to all Policies and Procedures of the Home.

31. Attend all mandatory training provided by the Home.

32. Participate in relevant NVQ level 2 or level 3 training to achieve required qualifications.

33. Be helpful and polite to visitors at all times.

34. Report all complaints to the Home Manager/Nurse in Charge and assist with investigations when required.

32. Attend and participate in staff meetings.

33. Assist with the promotion of continence.

34. Maintain professional knowledge and competence.

35. Display a genuine interest in working with the older person.

36. Work effectively as part of a team to achieve high standards.

37. Maintain registration with Northern Ireland Social Care Council.

Health and Safety

1.  Ensure that personal hygiene is of the highest standard.

2.  Use all equipment in accordance with manufacturer guidelines.

3.  Report immediately any faults with equipment to the Home Manager/ Nurse in Charge

4.  Maintain a safe environment for residents.

5.  Report all accidents to the Home Manager/Nurse in Charge. Record in the accident book.

6.  Adhere to the Fire Policy, COSHH Regulations and all other Health & Safety Guidelines.

7.  Ensure all equipment is clean and well maintained.
