Asbury United Methodist Church Newsletter – Published Monthly

JULY/AUGUST – 2011 90 Church Avenue, Forestville, Connecticut 06010 Volume 18, Issue 7 & 8

Dear Friends,

As summer is now upon us, we look to a lighter church schedule, but not a break from church life. In many areas of our ministry at Asbury, summer is the time that our busy members use to get ready for the fall programs. Just today, I took a phone message for Geri Beveridge: can you guess what it was about? YANKEE PEDDLAR FAIR! It may be summer vacation time, but our ministry continues on. I know our Sunday School staff are planning on welcoming children to classes all summer long while also prepping for the fall quarter. And don’t forget soup kitchen, Seniors (meeting weekly), Ruth Circle (pot luck picnic), and so many other events to follow. Make sure you check out what’s inside the newsletter here because there are upcoming events and opportunities that you’ll want to be a part of. What will you do over these next two months? I’m hoping that it includes some beach time (hoping my time includes beach time too!), some family time, some reconnect-with-good-friends time, some good book time, and some whatever-makes-you-happy time! Most of all, however, I am hoping, and praying, that you will continue to find time to bring God with you wherever you go. If you’re on the beach, take a moment to marvel at God’s good creation … and give God a prayer of thanks. If you’re with family, think of the wonderful family that you are part of: the family of God’s children … and say a prayer for God’s lost children. If you’re reconnecting with good friends, remember you have a friend, Jesus, who promises that you will never be left alone; take a minute to pray for those good friends who surround you. If it’s good book time, before you dig in, take a minute or two to read a passage from the “Good Book,” (Psalms are always a good place to start); prayerfully consider joining a study class when we start our classes in the fall. And if you are doing whatever makes you happy, take a moment to give God a word of praise for all that God has given to you. Plan to include God in your plans, and you’ll find God right there beside you: wherever you travel, in whatever you do this summer. Blessings to you for a peaceful and restful time of July and August!

God bless,

Pastor Laura

Dear Asbury,

I would like to thank my church family for the prayers and get-well cards received during my recent illness and stay at Bristol Hospital. I especially would like to thank the Outreach Committee and Pat Sallstrom for their delicious meals during my recovery at home.

Dan Fasci

Dear Asbury,

I wish to thank my Asbury Family for all of your prayers, cards and visits while I was recovering from a stroke. Also, the meals that were delivered to our home were greatly appreciated.

A million thanks,

From the May Family

Dear Asbury Church family,

Jackie and I are overwhelmed. You really "Made My Day" on Sunday, June 5th with Pastor Laura's complimentary sermonette along with "Bobbie Dear" Hentz, Jim Bechert and Mark Hultman's remembrances.

But especially this Book of Memories. Words cannot convey how much this means to me. Your memories of our years together awakened mine. And now I can look at a page and be reminded of so many reasons why we love one another.

Of all the churches I pastored, in Tennessee, Nevada, Mississippi, Long Island and here in Connecticut, our Asbury Church family has meant and still means the most to Jackie and me.

Now, I look forward to a Thursday when I can have a chat with Pastor Laura, and then go to The Senior Fellowship where we can be with our older friends whom we have known for many years.

And now, with the ministry of Pastor Laura, we are truly blessed because she is the best.

May God continue to bless

our church family,

Pastor Vin

Dear Asbury Senior Fellowship,

Thank you very much for your recent donation to the servicemen and servicewomen project fund of Asbury United Methodist Church. Your contribution will help allow us to continue this worthwhile project as long as we continue to have military personnel serving in harm’s way. For this, I am extremely grateful. Your contribution will either help pay the postage to send our care packages to the personnel we are currently supporting, or, will allow us to purchase items we are in need of to send to them.

At this time we have five military personnel we are supporting. I try to send them a package at least every two months so we can stay in touch with them on a regular basis. Your continued support is very much appreciated.

Jim Taylor

Thank you everyone for giving me your boxtops. You helped my class win this year's competition, but more importantly, our school really won with the money earned. It is very thoughtful of you to think of me. I will continue collecting them, so please keep on saving them. There is a container in Wesley Hall with the Box Top logo and my name should you like to drop them off.

Your friend,

Carli Beveridge
