WISCONSIN PUBLIC SERVICE
FARM SHOW
The ASABE Wisconsin Section meeting will be held on Wednesday, March 30th in conjunction with the Wisconsin Public Service Farm Show.
The annual Farm Show runs from March 29th – 31st and will be held at the EAA (Experimental Aviation Association) grounds in Oshkosh. The show will have more than 400 vendors covering over 700 booths. The show is expected to draw visitors from throughout the Midwest to see the latest in Agriculture Technologies. Like last year, the show will include a 3 day silent auction to benefit the Wisconsin FFA Foundation, an on-site agricultural consultant from WPS to answer energy management questions, and selected medical screenings from the UW-Oshkosh Nursing students (Tuesday and Thursday only).
Following the show, there will be a tour of the Bemis Innovation Center at 3:00. This will be followed by a social time at LaSure’s Hall at 4:30, a presentation on the Lake Delton Refurbish project by William Sturtevant, PE – State Dam Safety Engineer, and a dinner at 6:15. The buffet dinner will include chef carved sirloin of beef and chicken marsala. Dinner will be followed by a meeting to discuss any new section business, present section awards, and announce the new officer team for 2011/2012.

Now a global supplier of flexible packaging and pressure sensitive label materials headquartered in Neenah, Wisconsin, Bemis serves customers worldwide and produces packaging for products found in virtually every aisle of the grocery store.

With 2010 net sales of $4.84 billion, Bemis operates 81 facilities in 13 countries. Over two-thirds of Bemis packaging is used in the food industry, with the balance used in markets including medical, pharmaceutical, chemical and agribusiness. Our pressure sensitive products are used in industries including graphic arts, digital imaging, assembly engineering, communications and medical.

Lake Delton is a man-made freshwater lake in Sauk County in central Wisconsin. On the morning of June 9, 2008, a 400-foot portion of County Highway A that traverses the north side of Lake Delton failed, creating a new drainage channel to the Wisconsin River. At 2 am that day, 12 inches of rain caused one hundred residents to start sandbagging. The water began overflowing County Highway A at approximately 10 am. It flowed downhill to the Wisconsin River approximately 800 feet away and 40 feet below the lake’s level. The flow quickly created a 400-foot wide channel that drained the lake in 2 hours. Three homes washed away, and another two were destroyed when their foundations were undermined by the new outflow.

Following the draining of Lake Delton, the U.S. Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources Conservation Service allocated $160,000 to the Village of Lake Delton to redirect Dell Creek back to its normal path and through the Lake Delton Dam. The reconstruction took about 10 days to complete. A cofferdam was built to intercept the water and stop further erosion.

Restoration of Lake Delton was well underway by the end of October 2008. The gap at County A was filled with 12,000 truckloads of sand and tons of rocks. Sand to fill the gap was donated by a landowner less than a mile away saving $3 million in fuel and material costs. Improvements were also underway on the dam to allow it to withstand a 1,000 year flood without the lake's level rising. Highway A was reopened during the last week of November 2008. Water began flowing back into Lake Delton after the dam was closed in early December 2008. Costs to the State of Wisconsin were said to be $3.6 million and $2.5 million was spent by the village of Lake Delton.
