The Chautauqua Advancement Internship Program returns for a Third Year

Jamestown, NY – January 18, 2011

The Gebbie Foundation has awarded the Workforce Investment Board, Inc. (WIB) a grant to continue the innovative internship program, the Chautauqua Advancement Project. The purpose of this program is to attract and retain a talented workforce in our area and seeks to recruit young professionals looking for employment in the Jamestown region.

“Last year we placed eight young professionals as interns at local businesses,” saidKerri Brown E-Net Director. “As a result, five were hired as full-time employees after their internship ended. We hope to continue this trend with a new group of young professionals who want to remain in our area.”

“The E-Net Program is all about attracting and retaining talent in the region and we have an opportunity to retain these young, talented workers that may not have intended to return to their hometown in the first place,” said Sue McNamara, executive director of the WIB. “But they’re here now and we want to keep them.” Private sector businesses who have worked with the program include El Greco, BWB, Suburban Blend and others. We welcome any local business considering hiring, to contact us to discuss the possibility of tapping into the internship program.

In addition to bringing talent to our private sector businesses, several community organizations benefited from the program including the Visitor’s Bureau, CHRIC, WCAHospital, Audubon, Jamestown Savings Arena, JacksonCenter, Lucy-Desi WRFA and others. Some of the not-for-profits have been able to permanently hire the talented intern.

The program will place interns at host organizations Monday-Thursday, while on Fridays the interns will work with McNamara and Brown to develop leadership and networking skills while also coordinating a community project. “Last year for our community project we hosted a networking event for JamestownHigh School students to connect with local professionals. This year we hope to build on that same model and reach out and invite students from other school districts as well” said McNamara.
