Stop looking behind; 10 simple steps to grow our region in 2011

As I listen to conversations around our community I’m concerned that some continue to look to the past instead of the future. We worry aboutmissed opportunities and what could have been. Successful companies, organizations and cities focus on and talk about what they are and will be - not what once was or could have been.

As we say good-bye to 2010 and ring in 2011,I challenge you to start looking forward. See the present and the possibilities. Thinking differently is not easy, but here are ten New Year’s resolutions you can make that will help you recognize what we have and who we are as a region. And, unlike your resolution to stay in shape, these are ones you will actually enjoy.

New Year’s resolutions you will actually enjoy

1. Eat at a locally owned restaurant. The Rockford Region has more than 180 original restaurants. Enjoy uniqueAsiancuisine, home-style Italian dishes, fresh seafood, and more. You'll find the perfect dinner to fit your taste buds and your wallet. This year try one that’s new to you.

2. Visit a local attraction. When was the last time you wandered through AndersonJapaneseGardens, tried some hands-on fun at the DiscoveryCenterMuseum, or headed down the slides at Magic Waters? Pick any local attraction you haven’t visited, and give it a try.

3. Shop in a locally owned store. We all know what’s inside the big box stores, butwhat about that little shop you pass by on your way home? This year take the time to stop in. Visit one of the region’s countless specialty shops, boutiques, art galleries or antique stores.

5. Attend a festival. Our community has festivals of every size, from small ethnic events to On the Waterfront,Illinois’ largest music festival. Attend at least one that’s new to you this this year.

6. Take the long way home. You know what you will see on your usual drive home tonight. Get off the main streets and drive through the neighborhoods. You’ll still get home in time for dinner, and you’ll become more familiar with our community.

7. Walk a new path orneighborhood. Next time you take a walk, explore a new neighborhood or path system. WinnebagoCounty has numerous historic neighborhoods and more than 60 miles of paved walking paths. There must be at least a couple miles you haven’t explored yet.

8. Attend a local performance or event. Hockey, ballet, auto racing, theatrical performances, local bands - the options are endless. Pick something new, and give it a try.

9. Get outdoors. Winnebago County has some of the best park and forest preserve systems in Illinois with thousands of acres of natural areas, recreational areas, lakes, rivers and forests.Watch migratory birdsat Nygren Wetlands, rent a canoe at Rock Cut State Park, ride horses at Lockwood Park, or check out a park in a different neighborhood.

10. Head downtown. Downtown Rockford is busier than ever. Friday Night Flix has free movies in Davis Park, Rockford City Market offers a chance to shop local vendors, and Harris Winter Wonderland provides ice skating at Davis Park. Pick one of these experiences, and check it out for yourself.

By trying something new and changing our familiar habits and routines, we can see the Rockford Region as others see us and recognize our wonderful gifts and true potential. Once you’ve seen and done something new, be sure to tell someone else. For more information on any of these activities, or to find other fun, unique things to do, check out our website at or give us a call at 815.963.8111.
