JOB DESCRIPTION

PURPOSE OF JOB:

As a Director to work in partnership with other members of the Senior Management Team to ensure College targets are met and with the Deputy Principal the postholder will provide strategic curriculum development leadership by working effectively with curriculum and business managers.

To work with key College partners (internal and external) to provide strategic curriculum leadership with a focus on programmes for adults at all levels including HE.

As Director you will:

1.  Lead and develop a high quality provision to meet the needs of the College.

2.  Provide professional and learner focused resource expertise to the Corporation, Senior Management Team, College managers and staff in accordance with current and future legislation, government initiatives and priorities and best practice.

3.  Design and lead on the development of curriculum for adults, community learning and HE, ensuring that the strategy supports the overall strategic direction of the College.

4.  Work closely with the Deputy Principal, Principal and Corporation to manage effectively all aspects of the adults and HE agenda.

5.  Assist the Deputy Principal in the development of strategic curriculum planning for the area including setting and achieving targets and key objectives.

6.  To produce, effectively embed and manage an annual College Adult learning Strategy.

7.  To develop effective links with external partners, stakeholders and other agencies to ensure that the curriculum offer is responding to local needs.

8.  To develop an effective curriculum response to address the community within Bolton and expectations of stakeholders whilst maintaining value for money / cost effectiveness.

9.  To provide support for the development and delivery of pre-employment programmes

10.  Represent the College on external boards /committees and to be the main point of contact for Adult and HE curriculum issues.

11.  To collaborate wherever appropriate with Greater Manchester (GM) Colleges and other GM organisations and represent the College as required.

12.  Contribute to the process of strategic planning including the preparation of plans, measurement of risk, policy statements, reports and attend meetings as required.

13.  Work with other members of the Senior Management Team to ensure that the College operates on the basis of shared responsibility and provides united and coherent leadership and management for the College.

14.  Through liaison with the Senior Management Team, develop and deliver relevant aspects of key college planning documents, including the strategic plan, SAR, SED and College improvement plan.

15.  To input as appropriate to the design and implementation of College policies, procedures and information systems, to maximise the effective and efficient utilisation of resources and meet the changing requirements of Bolton College.

16.  To lead on the strategy and operational support for the HE programmes, including implementation of HE quality and other requirements.

17.  To liaise as appropriate with all of the College’s professional advisors and funding bodies on operational matters as appropriate.

GENERAL

1.  As part of the College’s strategic management team, contribute to effective corporate leadership and decision-making, the formulation of corporate policies and initiatives and the development of collaborative, cross-departmental working processes.

2.  Promote a culture of high performance through supportive and high quality managerial and professional leadership to a range of managers and staff, enabling them to fulfil their potential and provide effective advice, guidance and support.

3.  Develop high performing teams with high quality curriculum plans and programme designs, whilst maintaining efficient learning delivery.

4.  Produce accurate and timely reports and information for the senior managers and the Corporation, leading to informed decision making.

5.  Effectively manage, within College standards and procedures, a budget and associated resources.

6.  To work in partnership with the Deputy Principal and Director of Quality to ensure we work to meet our quality standards.

7.  Undertake appropriate staff development activities that support personal development and the changing needs of the College and its environment.

8.  Be aware of, and responsive to, the changing nature of the College and its context and adopt a flexible and pro-active approach to work.

9.  To actively promote and embed equality, diversity and inclusion within the College and lead on the College’s EDI agenda and equality annual report.

10.  To actively support all College policies, including the College’s Mission and strategic aims and ensure policies are supported by staff and students.

11.  To actively contribute to the College’s safeguarding children and safeguarding vulnerable adult agenda.

12.  Undertake all such other duties as may be required by the Principal / Deputy Principal.

13.  The postholder will be expected to comply with the rules and regulations which the Corporation may from time to time issue to ensure the efficient operation of its business and the welfare and interests of its students and employees.

14.  In carrying out their duties, the Director must:

§  Comply with Health and Safety regulations and policies

§  Be aware of the College statement on Health and Safety

§  Be fully aware, and comply with, College policies including equal opportunities and risk management

Whilst this job description provides an overall framework for the post, there will be flexibility to adopt responsibilities and priorities to meet the needs of the post holder. Detailed objectives and a personal development plan will be agreed on an annual basis.

Place of Work

The principle place of work for this post will be the Corporation’s premises at the Deane Road campus. However, the postholder may be required to work on either a temporary or an indefinite basis at any premises at which it may from time to time provided services.

Working Hours

The postholder will be expected to work such hours as are necessary for the proper performance of their duties and responsibilities, with a minimum of 38 hours per week. The postholder may from time to time be required to work evenings and/or weekends in which case time off in lieu will be given during the normal working week.

Probationary Period

If the postholder is a new employee to the College, the first 9 months of employment will be a probationary period, during which the suitability of the postholder for the position will be assessed. The Corporation reserves the right to extend the probationary period, if, in its opinion, circumstances so require. During the probationary period, the employment may be terminated either by the postholder or by the Corporation on giving one month written notice.

Appraisal

The postholder will be required to participate in any staff appraisal or performance management scheme approved by the Corporation.

Confidentiality

The postholder is part of the College’s Senior Management Team and as such will have access to a variety of confidential information which must be protected unless disclosure is authorised by the Executive Team.

Health & Safety

The College is fully committed to ensuring that health and safety of its staff and students is paramount. All staff must comply with the College’s health and safety procedures.

In the interests of Health and Safety, smoking is not permitted at Bolton College.
